The Bow Hold is akin to that of a Violin Bow but the thumb is holding it lower down the stick because of how short it is.

The thumb is different because of the angle of the bow, not because of the length of the stick.

Great video ! It's interesting that your NH bow hold is closer to a classical violin one than mine, but I'm a classical violinist from the start ^^ I hold the NH bow with the thumb under the frog, I find it gives me much more stability.

You can use Bow Hold buddies with a Nyckalharpa Bow (Frog Frog, & Hold Fish) because it's held in a similar manner to a Violin bow.
@NyckelharpaUK4 жыл бұрын
The bow hold buddy would push your first finger round in the wrong place - so no I don't think that would work. The stick goes under the first finger much higher up by the first joint and the buddy would prevent that.

So I should clean the strings on my arpeggione. I'll give that a try and see how it sounds. Thanks for covering so much useful info in one video. I'm trying to learn to use a bow and it's surprisingly complicated. So many subtleties to balance!

If there is too much rosin on the strings it can sound gritty. So cleaning the strings is a good idea. I don't use any cleaning stuff, I just wipe it down, usually with my sleeve!!

well you're showing a violin bow hold here basically. It does work for nyckelharpas but I've seen some Swedish masters do something different: Higher up from the frog, and the thumb and first or second finger actually touch each other.
@NyckelharpaUK10 жыл бұрын
It's not quite the same as the fiddle bow. There are subtle differences with the thumb position, the angle of the bow and then the pressure and speed. The problem with holding the bow higher up is that because you're elbow is static it is already a really short bow. If you hold it higher up you really restrict how much hair you have to work with. :) It looks like your bow hold would be perfect for the nyckelharpa, I'm not a fiddler so I couldn't comment on it from a fiddle point of view. Of course, it's best to go to a real live teacher, this is to get people going in the right direction. :) I really recommend my teacher's video series... kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6LLdaCCmdRjr6s

NyckelharpaUK ok so you watched my fiddle video? I have been playing the nyckelharpa for 2,5 years now and am still experimenting with different holds. Holding the bow further away wouldn't automatically mean that there is less hair to use, though I see what you mean. (Watch some folk fiddlerrs, speciall in Irish folk: They grip very high up and use very little of the hair most of the time). Being a fiddler I automatically first used a grip similar to the fiddle and was also shown so by "European" nyckelharpa teachers but I spent a week in Sweden last year and was shown by some great Swedish players that they do it differently. The nyckelharpa bow moves in a very different way from the violin bow. Also historically, on gammalharpor, the (crude) bows were gripped in a fist. I'm not saying this has to be copied but it is sort of the roots of the nyckelharpa bowing. Spending the week in Sweden mainly taught me one thing: The differences between nyckelharpa and fiddle are bigger than I thought and even though it helps to be a fiddler, we shouldn't treat it as just "a fiddle with keys". So this might mean that we shouldn't just copy and adapt the bowing and bow hold.

I do agree that there is a big difference between playing fiddle/violin and nyckelharpa and therefore the bow hold. But I can't say that what Vicki is explaining here is that far off from what I have been taught by several "Swedish master players", as you say. One of the biggest differences is that the bow is held with the first "joint"/part of the index finger instead of the second, which leads to a different hand position. Vicki is not really stressing this (in fact, at first it looks a bit like she does hold it with the second part), but she is doing it, if you look at her hand closely. Otherwise I see no big difference in the hold and the differences that are there compared to the bow holds of Swedish players are minute and personal choice. (What is different is how she moves the bow, though, many Swedish player think its better to keep the natural movement of the arm instead of bending the wrist so much. So they don't move the bow in a straight line as she does here - but I think bowing is something different than holding the bow, which is the topic of this video, right? :) ) About the topic of "holding the bow higher up"... well, I actually just talked with David Eriksson about this at a workshop last week (who holds the bow higher up; I asked him because I started to do the same) and he said it's just a matter of finding the balance point on the bow (and for his it is higher up) and that he actually moves the position, depending on what he is playing. So this is certainly nothing that is set in stone :) Of course you can explain in more detail why you hold the bow like that, but this does fine for a quick introduction through an internet video, I think ;)

"(What is different is how she moves the bow, though, many Swedish player think its better to keep the natural movement of the arm instead of bending the wrist so much. So they don't move the bow in a straight line as she does here)" Looking at the video it does look like I have a straight line, but I don't in real life. I also follow the natural movement of the arm. I think It's because I'm sitting down. I was able to have a straighter line. When I'm standing it's not the same, it curves round more. Really good point there. It was more about the bow hold, I need to do another video!

Honestly, I was quite suprised to see you doing it like that here, because I also think you're usually not doing the bowings that straight :)

You’re sliding with your elbow too much to compensate to keep the bow parallel like a violin. Don’t keep it parallel. Instead have a movement like a semi circle. At least that is the traditional way of playing and you will be able to play faster and less sloppy
@NyckelharpaUK2 жыл бұрын
The camera angle possibly makes it look like I don’t swing it round in an arc. Trust me I’m not a sloppy player and I can play pretty fast. But thank you for your suggestion. Do you play? I can’t tell from your channel. You should have a good look around mine.

@@NyckelharpaUK I couldn't tell that it was an arc and I didn't hear you mention anything about the proper technique. I play the violin and I have been researching nyckelharpa since I'm interested in picking it up. I didn't mean that you're a slow or sloppy player specifically, just people in general who slide their elbow (wich I noticed from the video). English is my second language so maybe it came across wrong. Just thought I'd mention what the traditional bowing technique is since I'm guessing the aim for this video is to teach new things about the nyckelharpa. I get a very hostile, defensive and passive aggressive vibe from your answer so I'd rather not watch any other video honestly...
