I love your videos, kisses and hugs from the US, you have the voice of an angel, the face of an angel, and your love of music has raised my old singing voice, I am a keyboardist and singer and my work is on Drooble, not nearly as melodic as your playing, your teaching and your voice. Your voice is hypnotic, that of a great teacher, and having recently been hurt in a major car accident, I was run over while walking in Phoenix, watching your videos has helped my pain because I always seek out music videos and lectures to listen to, living alone. I am an empty nester and I have a daughter just about your age who also teaches like you, I love the way young women teach in our world!

Hold, on, damn, I actually thought you were swedish given your command of the music. I was just assuming your pronunciation was some strange attempt at pronouncing it to be easier to understand for the international viewers! lol! Yeah, I love the trollpolska by the way. Smörgåsklickarnas version on youtube is also pretty nice.

This is my first comment on KZbin. I play no instruments (even if I know music theories, to an extent), but I’m very interested in the history of music and instruments. I was completely unaware of the nyckelharpa before I stumbled on one of your videos, so I see them all. Since you’re a talented teacher (and performer, but there are very few videos of you performing only - perhaps on patreon?), maybe you would like to tell me if I’m mistaken thinking the nyckelharpa as a late evolution of the ancient ‘symphonia’ (with the bow in place of the revolving wheel)? With admiration for your life choice and talent.
@EmelieWaldken
@EmelieWaldken 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your nice message ! No the nyckelharpa is actually an evolution of the tagelharpa, jouhikko and other instruments where the nails are pressing on the strings (not the fingers' skin), but as its evolution happened at a similar time-period and in similar regions as the organistrum family (later to give the hurdy-gurdy), there are many similarities with that group of instruments - although the logic of the keyboard is totally different. There are indeed quite few videos of my live performances, wishing to fix that in not too long, I hope ! It's always super hard to get good live pictures and videos even more. I never take care of that myself when I play, I have enough to think about ^^

I've just looked at the shortie in the woods of the first part of the trollpolska about 20 times to try and understand when you pull and push the bow but I'm finding it very difficult to understand it all! I have noticed however that you don't always pull on the strong beat. Please explain it all to me. I didn't play the violin before the nyckel only piano and accordeon and if I don't have the signs above the notes I'm very handicapped. I don't want to get into bad habits from the start. learning nyckel only for 4 months. You maybe told me once not to worry about it so much but I want to do it all properly. As I do all my other hobbies, singing , sewing, ceramics, arts, sports and life in general. If not I'm not at all pleased. How can I sort this problem out?
@EmelieWaldken
@EmelieWaldken Жыл бұрын
I understand the difficulty, it takes a lot of time to get used to learning bowings by watching and imitating ! In general in this sort of polskas, the bow goes down on the 1st and 3rd beats, and up on the 2nd. It does vary of course, but if you take this as a basis and then adapt a bit depending on the melody, the feeling should be "correct" =)

@EmelieWaldken 3 жыл бұрын
Hej Jeremy, yes this book is the fantastic Smålands folkmusik collected by Magnus Gustavsson. It's enormous and contains many tunes ! However, whether you should buy this book in particular or another one depends on which swedish region your prefer in terms of repertoire. Småland has a lot of slängpolskas ; if you prefer triplet polskas or other round polskas (polskas in 3-1), you should check regions a bit more to the north.

Thank you for these videos, Emelie. I love this tune, but my small button box instruments do not have the #note needed, so it must be played with the natural. Also, the tempo of this tune seems to be more of a regular 1-2-3 that the irregular polska beat. Is that acceptable? Best wishes, from the USA,....Forrest.
@EmelieWaldken
@EmelieWaldken 5 жыл бұрын
Hej hej, what I explained in the Triplet-polska video is that these polskas are precisely regular ones - as opposed to the short first-beat polskas for example. They're not slängpolskas though. Have fun playing that one, no matter with which alterations :)

You mention in some of your videos the presence and importance of "blue" notes, as being slightly different-pitched from the standard ones. How does one accomplish this on a nyckelharpa?
@EmelieWaldken
@EmelieWaldken 3 жыл бұрын
The nyckelharpa's keyboard can be tuned by turning the tangents slightly. One can also get a slightly higher note by pressing harder on a key - similar to bending on guitar. By combining both, one can achieve a whole range of blue notes on nyckelharpa - both on-the-spot and with some preparation (for the retuning).

@@EmelieWaldken Could be worth finding out about - there are absolutely huge Internet resources of trad music material using/based on it. Most now offer display in staff notation, but it's generated using ABC. And some people read direct from ABC.
@Jemtheflute
@Jemtheflute 3 жыл бұрын
@@EmelieWaldken you can see an example in this document: app.box.com/s/qyntwcornkd8x60i7oozhcana6zz2310. That has staff notation done using the full computer form of ABC, also shown as it can be used in ABC software to transpose it or edit it to suit. Many people use a simple form of ABC where they simply write out the note names in rhythmic groups, maybe using capitals and minuscules to denote different octaves and with signs for ornaments, but without any designation of time or key signature or note lengths etc. I guess it's the latter that Obsc3n3 was requesting.

Hm I don't really agree. I think trolls are just humanoid wild animals and/or spirits. I don't think they are AGAINST humans from the start, sure some have mischief in their blood, but mostly they are very disturbed by human activities, such as cutting down forests and building big grey cities.

@@EmelieWaldken Trolls in tradition do tend to have abrasive personalities, though. Not sure if you have this word in Swedish, but in many Norwegian dialects you are "trollat" ("trollish") if you have committed mischief out of malice.
