At first I was scared that this would just be an angry rant (and I would have toltally understood, it is really sad what some people do to their birds), but I am really happy to see that you actually tell people what to do better! I feel so bad that I thought you wouldn't do it, I'm so sorry! Well done, Nymphica!

Really, this was a very good video! I wish more people who treat their birds good and in the correct way would do something like this, so the people who don't would see it. When I was little, I had a friend who lived in my street and her family had a grey parrot and most of the time he lived alone in this very small cage, smaller than the transportation cage we have for our grey parrots, and the cage stood on a table in the garden. Nobody was in the garden so he was completely alone. He had really bad deviant behavior allready, but the family wouldn't believe me and even my father, who studied biology and had birds and other animals since he was 3, that the bird was suffering. I don't know what happened to him, after primary school I lost contact to the girl and I haven't seen the bird for a long time. But I doubt that they ever gave him a partner or a bigger cage, if he is lucky they eventually sold him, maybe he died or maybe he still suffers, it makes me sad just thinking about it...

I couldn't agree with you more on this. Years ago I had a cockatiel, and he was the most intelligent and friendliest bird anyone could ever hope for. We named him Dino (after The Flintstones pet dinosaur) and I still miss him every day. Birds are highly intelligent. The arrogance of some people to treat other beings like trash astounds me.

I'd like to add: YOU CAN TRAIN YOUR BIRD TO SHOW THEIR WINGS AND FEATURES give them treats and praise and they will love the trick! I also hate to say it but I think a lot of the lost emphasis on training and part of rating show birds based on intelligence is that many birds used in shows are horribly inbred, I'm mainly thinking English budgies here. Unfortunately I don't think a lot of breeders and people who's hobby is show birds do have the type of compassion that people have who treat their parrots as equals and companions. That's why my interest is primarily in rescue, and telling the stories.

i love this video and the message and in my country is our culture to keep birds but keep them horribly i have some birds but they live in a big aviary were they have all of the correct care and i never saw someone else take care of them correctly even people keep there finches in a cage that is as big as them not even joking i wish and get them everywhere i see loads of people with especially green finches in these small cages and in bars were people are smoking in their faces and loads of music i feel so bad for them

That is so sad to hear!! :( But I'm glad there are people like you who care about the well-being of the birds. Maybe if some hobbyists in your region would see the video, they would slowly start at least thinking about changing their ways? I really would hope so... Keep being awesome! World needs people like you!

thank you so much ! and i wish people would began changing their ways here even my dad sometimes just bring birds then i have to care for them because he doesn't know how to correctly the other time i rescued 4 budgies that in their entire life were living in a cage only about a inch bigger them but now they are in the bird aviary were they have the correct food too since they were only given millet in their life and i wish they change their methods even i'm against how they get their finches because they are almost always wild caught in here that is Malta and the birds would come to migrate and i feel so sad for them and for me it's enough because of this and people shooting birds our eagle is extinct there are now only in Sicily and Italy

Oh god, I know what you mean by a bird screeching in panic. I have a little Lorikeet with deformed toes on both feet - both of her inner toes at the front are bent on thei sides, and I have to trim her nails every few months. We use standard nail clippers, but -- she panics when she sees it and stresses terribly, so we started covering her with a towel to try lesson it, but even then we can hear her screeching. It breaks my heart each time, but its necessary to trim these nails because they grow and grow until they curl around and dig into the side of her toes and break through the skin. Sometimes I wonder if it'd be less cruel to have a vet somehow remove the toenails on the deformed toes altogether.

Jeeze that's utterly terrifying. People treat their cars with more love at car shows than what you described. As much as we baby them and give them anthropomorphic personality traits/names etc.... they're just machines. How disturbing that people could treat an actual living creature worse than a machine.

I noticed in Zwolle bird market, it seemed like you are more imporant and more serious breeder the less you treat birds like a living, feeling thing. I saw people carrying the crates filled with birds swinging the crates around like purses on a happy day. I felt like you would be weak as a person and as a breeder if you see and treat the birds with love and care.

it's also sad that people still think birds are something you just keep in a cage 24/7 and be pretty and repeat what you say, mine go inside the cage when they go to sleep and in the morning when I take planket off and they come out and are with us all the time unless they choose to go inside the cage, they are part of the family and join our daily basis (of course it doesn't work with everyone but my parrots are so lazy to fly around they just usually hang by their cage and play with toys, also they always land on top of cage and never miss it or leave the room even tho we don't have a door between rooms)

Hello!!! I saw your video on Derpla and thought you would be a great person to ask this! I just rescued a white bellied caique just like Derpla! She was at my local aviary and was given up from her previous owner, resulting in stress and plucking of her feathers :c Shes such a nice little girl only about a year old and I was wondering what you would recommend that I could do to help her heal? She is growing her feathers back I can see the little feathers sprouting back. I've seen things like Featherriffic and pluck no more and seen people use like an aloe juice/water micture spray to see if they may be plucking due to dry skin or adding red palm oil to foods? I would really appreciate your help in making my new bird healthy like she used to be ; n ; Lots of love~!!!
@BlackthornWitch
@BlackthornWitch 7 жыл бұрын
SceneMuffin Hi there! I Would be glad to help! Sounds like you are already doing something right if the feathers are growing! In Derpla's case he wasn't plucking but his feathers simply didn't grow due to lack of nutrition and growth delay, but the diet still plays big role in both cases. When the bird is plucking it is also important to know why it is plucking. It can be stress, sexual frustration, being bored, allergies, lack of vitamins, dry skin... So if the plucking has stopped there is something you are doing right. :) You can give a little extra boost of vitamins and minerals and introduce a variety of nutrition rich foods. Also giving their brain something to do is important. Foraging toys and activities are great. My Pyro LOVES training sessions done with clicker training and positive reinforcement! He gets so much joy when he succeeds and understands what I'm trying to teach him. It will also be helpful If there are any behavioral problems in the future. Usually you start to see the signs of their childhood when they are around 3. (They say that ages 3-7 are the worst with caiques). But if you have learned to train and your bird knows how the system works, it will be so much easier to get through even harder moments.

Thank you so much for your advice!! Ill first start off with giving her a nice environment and a great diet and if some of her underwing feathers still havent sprouted I might look for additional supplements then ^w^. If nobody is allowed to give their show birds chemicals or do any of the other unhealthy practices . Then it becomes a non-issue and changes the standards of what they look for in a bird show puts everybody on the same playing field. Then as you said it comes down to good breeding practices and handling and care of the bird

Ways to make bird shows more ethical, give them a hut to have some privacy in when they're uncomfortable as opposed to just having them in a four way exposed cage for hours and hours and hours in front loooooads of new scary people. Minimise the noise, etc. I don't know much about bird shows but I don't see the need for taking them out and terrifying them.

I've always wanted a bird or something like that, but my brother is SUPER abusive and forceful to animals. We have cats, but honestly, even though I love them to death, I wish that we didn't have them, for their sake. My brother forces them onto their backs and sniffs them, and also roughly grabs them and forces them to lay with him so he can slobber all over their heads. Their heads are literally wet after he is done with them. He was nice to them at first, but he quickly started to harass them as he got used to them, and GOD FORBID if you lift one finger in defense, because he will FLIP OUT. He has literally threatened to kill me multiple times, and he was serious about it, too.

Nymphica yes, they know about him and his “habits” but they treat it like it’s normal! He rarely gets punished and the punishments aren’t even that bad. He is really mean to the cats, too, like he will do “catzilla” where he grabs them by their front paws and dances them around. He isn’t even special ed just so you know.Also, if I even dare “steal” my mom’s cat, she will take my phone and wifi (that’s why it took me so long to reply to your comment) I don’t even steal her cat, she just hops into my bed to sleep with me. The most I can do is wait until he is in juvie, which I have no doubt he’ll end up in. 😫 Also my mom won’t give the cats to a nice loving family, she thinks there is no reason to😑
