I came on the job in 1993, and I remember what we were taught in the academy: CPR: Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect. I come from the old school of policing with long-sleeved shirts and neckties, short-sleeved shirts, and no ties, along with wearing our uniform hats. Lastly, other than medical or religious exceptions, absolutely, positively, "NO BEARDS" while in uniform.

The vast majority of cops can't get their shit together just the same as most regular people can't. That said, there should be a fitness test every 6 months, which includes strength, self-defense, and cardio standards that are actually challenging and strictly enforced. They should have, at minimum, the same standards as the military, if not higher, since they interact with the public daily. The majority of these cops can't close physical distance in any situation more than an innocent bystander can and are more of a liability than an asset because they're armed, poorly trained, and incapable of handling stress. Getting a PT leader who is also a cop (essentially a drill sergeant) shouldn't also require a $1B budget increase -- though I'm sure they'll ask for it since being crooks is part of the job for their leadership -- since it literally requires nothing they don't already have other than the will to do it. An out-of-shape cop and departments with low standards are a disgrace to themselves and the people they serve and shouldn't be allowed out from behind a desk.

I agree with that ..in the UK police are and allways have been able to have beards, goaties or tashes as long as they are kept groomed / trimmed properly to a resonable lenght then i dont see a problem with it tbh iin the NYPD . as you say not everyone can shave every day as they may have sensitve skin and then get shaving rash (which looks a HELL of a lot worse ) i dont shave due to that problem so jeep my beiard down to a tidy resonable trim ect! .... i worked in the medical profession in the uk in the blood service and worked in a sterile facility / room so had to wear a beard snood ( a bit diffrent obv to a police officer on the streets and NOT praticle OBV) the point im trying to make is there are allways solutions and like i said in the UK the dress coded /personal grooming allows for faical hair as mentioned above as long as its tidy/ well trimed and groomed!

When I owned a bar the rule was that as the owner you should dress better than your customers in order to come across the right way way but also to show that you respect yourself and what you do. There is a reason why Troopers are respected and they don’t even have to drive around with partners.
