Welcome to another edition of NYRTIG shorts, where we take a look at the historical 9th Ave and 36th Street area.
This area has a rich history dating back to 1862 when the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Railroad was established as a surface excursion railway to Coney Island. However, it wasn't until 1864 that the line reached Coney Island, running from 39th Street to its final destination. In 1893, the line was connected to the BER Fifth Ave line, allowing service from Coney Island's West End and Culver Depots via Brooklyn's surface routes.
As part of the Dual Contracts of 1913, an elevated line called the West End was constructed over New Utrecht Avenue, 86th Street, and Stillwell Avenue. The West End Elevated opened in 1916, followed by the Culver Line in 1919.
Original film footage from Edward J Quigley and remastered photos from various archives, including PSC, BOT, NYHS, NYTM, UC, and U Penn Archives.
