Hello, I am writing to you from Spain. Congratulations on this very educational video. Could you tell me where I could get this container with a plastic barrier to separate liquids? Thank you very much. Anjel

What fish live in the mixed salt and fresh waters of New York City? I was amazed in the Cayman Islands when I snorkeled in the mixed fresh and salt water pool of the variety of ocean schools of colorful fish species. Suddenly thousands of fish-just like the 55 gallon salt water aquarium I had in Syracuse, New York! Julie Ann Racino, ASPA Science and Technology in Government, 2021

Thanks for your question. Some fish species (like sunfish) prefer freshwater, some species (like seahorses) prefer saltier waters, some species (like striped bass) move in between the extremes, and some species are at home in the brackish mix of fresh water and salty ocean waters. Three of these include: -The white perch, which is common throughout the estuary. This is a modest-sized silvery fish closely related to striped bass. -The hogchoker, an endearing flat fish that can grow to about the size of your palm and is well camouflaged with brown stripes and speckles. -The mummichog, a small killifish that schools in and out of marshy waters with the tides. Males develop bright yellow bellies and gold spangles during mating season.

There are hundreds of different species of fish and invertebrates that live in the estuary, many prefer the salty waters of the harbor. Some favorite include Sea Horses, Horseshoe Crabs, Oyster Toadfish, Sea Robin, and many others. Here's a link to a beautiful illustrated guide of animals in NY Harbor: static1.squarespace.com/static/5c5604249b8fe80245a0d052/t/60c3cc5c691cd51fbd4d8780/1623444583203/Species+ID+Guide_June+2021.pdf

Is there a barrier between fresh water and sea water? (when they meet). If there is, what is the name/designation for the barrier/boundary?

The place where salt and fresh water meet is known as the Salt Front or Salt Wedge. It can be located as far south as Yonkers or as far north as Poughkeepsie, based on how much freshwater is pouring into the estuary from the surrounding streams and land. Where fresh and saltwater mix together, the water is called brackish.
