I struggled with this one for WAY too long. The thing I had missed was the 45 in r1c1 that made a pair with r4c1. Once I saw that (in your as always helpful) video, everything fell into place. Thanks!

For some grids, I think that pencil marking may be more obfuscating than revealing. This one was not especially difficult without any notation, although it did have one fairly tricky step that required a bit of short-term memory (23 = row 2 column 3), 23, 68, 19, 18, 24 (hidden pair in box, plus restriction in box 1), 14, 54, 84, 79, 48, 35, 36, 85, 45, 65, 55, 61, 52, 66, 46, 56, 53, 22 (hidden pair in column 1 greatly restricts 4s), 16, 26, 17, 69, 47, 38, 43, 42, 41, 12, 11, 62, 63, 31, 33, 72, 88, 28, 27, 98, 76, 73, 77, 93, 82, 99, 89, 96, 86, 91, 81, 97, 87.

Instead of the 45 pair in C1, my puzzle cracked with a weird chain of logic. At 8:00, one can observe that in R1 the 1 goes in either C6 or C7, If it's in C6, then this forces all the numbers along the chain R1C6 -> R2C6 -> R2C2 -> R6C2 -> R6C9 (forcing them to be 1 -> 6 -> 3 -> 4 -> 1 respectively). If instead R1C7 is 1, then this forces the chain R1C7 -> R4C7 -> R6C9 to still be a 1. So either way R6C9 is a 1. Is there a name for this technique?

I was totally stumped by this. I eventually watched Rangsk find the 45 pair and it all sailed through very quickly thereafter. So much to learn....... Plus, thanks Rangsk for this NYT series; it is so helpful for learners like me.

I don’t think you answered my question from the other day: do you know what triggers the Deet Deet Doot in SudokuPad? Sometimes it appears and sometimes not. I can’t figure it out!

The short answer is it triggers when you place a 3 in the corner of the grid. The long answer involves memes from various Sudoku Communities that have been mashed together, including Cracking the Cryptic and the SudokuCon fundraising live stream.

Simon from Cracking The Cryptic always sings that when he gets a 3 in the corner, and hence Sven (the sudokupad programmer) added the fun when typing a 3 in a corner…
