I've recently seen Russian - no less - material on how Lech Walesa got Boris Yeltsin to agree for Poland & Co. to join NATO. If you think it was a banality tp join NATO, you haven't done your homework: there were only six (!) years between Russian forces leaving Poland, and the country entering the NATO. And according to the Russian sources, this mustachioed man in the video was behind it.

I saw Lech on BBC back in 1990 and then understood why he is better admired in English speaking countries. They smoothed all in translation (I guess even the translator was afraid he would be accused of linguistic mistakes if he translated faithfully).

I believe You when You say it's even worse in Romania than in PL. As a Pole I've watched lecture by former US Ambassador to Romania about American betrayal of Eastern Europe during the transformation period. At the same time You should remember that Wałęsa turned out to be a traitor of the Polish nation, it has been proven by the Public Historic Institute beyond any doubt that he was a secret communist collaborator all this time. In other words he betrayed the anti-socialist movement and effectively prevented any real transformation of our State into a free country. Trust me please, do NOT think of Poland as a country noticeably better than Romania. It's full blown socialism here, this time in a fascist way (they took most of our God-given rights in recent years, state has tremendous control over personal life and business), old socialist clans still hold all (!) of power and assets, they're filthy rich while other struggle real bad. Real bad.

The Gdansk shipyard was higly unprofitable, that‘s why the Commies wanted to sack workers. That was also a condition Western banks attached to their loans. Walesa knew this, of course, and it was the main reason the workers there were so susceptibel to strikes. It was a strike against the sacking of workers. Needless to say, the Commies chose the most troublesome. I don‘t want to minimize the political aspect of the whole thing which required an extra portion of courage. But to fight for a more rationale economie (capitalism) and then complain about the vanishing of an obsolete shipyard is either naive or hypocritical.
