Lanier should be in Andrew Yang's cabinet. There needs to be a Department of Technology. Andrew Yang already says that he will be in touch with Silicon Valley folks to know what they are working on and try to point them in a different direction if what they are working on might not be such a good idea. We need a president who communicates with Silicon Valley and supports human-centered technology.

freedom dividend is quite literally welfare capitalism, aka social democracy (capitalism with a social safety net), which in some sense can be referred to as socialism (if one considers the etymology of the term and doesn't just pick their favorite definition from google). I would argue it would simply be a bandaid on a much bigger problem, would further prevent wage increases and probably just placate the masses even more. Your comment makes you sound like a social democrat which would align more with Bernie Sanders, who has spent his entire career trying to save capitalism by strengthening the safety net.

"What does it take to recognize a dystopia?"
@le_th_
@le_th_ 5 жыл бұрын
Empathy for others. That is #1 what it takes to recognize a dystopia. Ability to think deeply about matters. That is #2. Personality traits scoring high on conscientiousness, mid-range on extroversion, and mid-range on agreeableness. Those are my guesses.
@le_th_
@le_th_ 5 жыл бұрын
@Mountain Whale Please tell how you expect to do that...create a society all will consider dystopian...when you have people with empathy who respect the social contract and the rights of others and those who prefer chaos and destruction (sociopaths and psychopaths) and ignore the rights of others? I eagerly await how you plan to achieve this. ...and you fail to understand what empathy is if you think it's "hippy love". You may need to think a little more deeply and broadly before you grasp what it is and what it is NOT.

"Data is the new oil." Yep, and we already live in ever-increasing data/message pollution, heading straight for the Dystopia Jaron describes.(If we're not already there) What we easily forget about Information is that it requires Energy to create, store and transport. Jarons plan sounds nice but it will just increase the huge amounts of energy already needed to run the Net, by adding another cascade of data energy from every single Info-event. Data centres use huge amounts of power, adding to the overall energy-use bill, and inevitably adding proportional heat to the system. Apple wanted to build a data centre in Ireland which would have used as much power as Dublin, the largest city of 1.5 million people....! ? Haven't even mentioned how financial Power will act as it always does....to maintain itself, like banks, corporations seeking monopoly Or the possible adverse mental health effects. Remember the opening scene of Johnny Mnemonic where people were twitching and jerking from NAS(Nerve Attenuation Syndrome), or Information Overload....?

@@Edvontinkleberg Even worse, with everybody selling data companies would pay less for it. Also, companies like exclusivity of data, it's the only major difference companies can have nowadays (explains Amazon failure in China, Apple behind Google in maps...). So they would offer it but with more controls and monitoring over user activity.

You are dead on!! Sad to see all these idiots blindly celebrating this half cocked plan without thinking about how it is completely impossible to implement under the current economic and social system. These nerds in the comments are all cozy and middleclass and life has never really sucked for them. They think society is made up completely of other people like them. While the vast majority of people have had enough experience with life's hardships to realize the difficulties there would be implementing something even remotely close to this. It's pathetic. This is a distraction to make people feel better about doing nothing.

Love it and Jaron's last book is a quick and concise read that should be mandatory for everyone! But one thing that irks me: socialism does NOT mean "everything is free". The core of a socialist ethos is FAIR pay and an equitable society were certain core services are subjected to market pressures. I repeat: under socialism people would NOT WORK FOR FREE = they would get paid fairly for their contribution and services. LOVE YOU JARON!!!

1:51 I feel like this part speaks truth to how Twitter “recommends” tweets that are most likely to get a response from the user. So the user engages with the app longer as he responds to this tweet that might’ve angered or instilled fear in them. I realized this and use the app less now. And when I do I try not to engage with these tweets.

People are addicted to giving their data as it is, so if you add a financial aspect then everyone will become an influencer if the example of posting a picture is what he means. We humans sure can be knuckleheads, but whenever presented with big societal, economic, or political obstacles and problems we always find creative solutions. With all our accumulated progress, I believe these challenges are becoming less and less difficult to overcome. I predict a future of abundant options. We simply have to collectively choose to make our future abundant. The few in power are becoming obsolete. The masses are gaining ground. I am not clear yet on exactly how our data translates to cold hard cash, but I do know it's valuable. I love this idea. Let's do it! Go team human.

That's the ideal, but too far from our reality. If 50 years ago work used to keep the wheel spinning, today is just inequality and speculation. Unfortunately. I just don't understand what Venezuela has to do with Universal income...

@@wafou8702 Venezuela printed new money to support their socialist ideas, which caused major inflation. No American wants that. Thankfully, Andrew Yang's Universal Income is supported through a VAT. Venezuela created wealth from nothing = BAD Andrew Yang re-using wealth that's already there = GOOD

It's a great start, but by making data more expensive for companies to mine and use, it encourages them to develop even more powerful predictive algorithms, and even more powerful methods of priming and suggestion to make sure that they are making the maximum amount of profit from showing you ads. Furthermore, this will drive companies to mine data in countries and locations where data protections do not yet exist, as well as to go to greater lengths to hide their data mining practices. It will also make the illicit purchase and sale of personal data much more lucrative.

This describes exactly the birth of influencers and how now almost every video you watch on YT, TT, FB, IG, whether it's just a family making a recipe or showing their baby, or a large company with multiple creators or personalities, they are all monetized by showing you ads or selling you things by saying a blurb about a product and posting links that include affiliate links or discount codes.
