Well, depending on how old the eldest guy who was charged is, it might be the equivalent of a life sentence. If he gets 16 years, and he’s in his 60s for example, he’ll most likely die in prison. Hence, calling it a “life sentence”.

Beards are central to their way of life, and it denotes manhood, among the Amish. From what I understand. @@russ7009 I understand that but to charge them with a hate crime that's a bit much. As far as the charges go B and E that is a misdemeanor, kidnapping is a felony, and assault. Which should have carried a sentence of 10-20 years maximum. Life is a bit much. Now they are the same religion, citing a difference in religion again doesn't quite work, they are part of the same community. For the record it's not that I don't understand the significance of the offense, I just think it's overblown. If they were even part of different sects then yeah a hate crime might be warranted but this is a severe stretch. I don't see it. The other part of the problem is we have always treated the Amish as separate from the rest of the country because of their unique customs, so it's going to be a little hard to say this is a hate crime. A crime yes, a felony yes, and hate crime no.

@@russ7009 Way to go misrepresenting what I said. In order for this to be a hate crime, it would have to be about racial or in this case sectorial differences. It's not. Apparently you can't distinguish between people in the same group with the same beliefs that decided that one of the people in their group acted inappropriately and decided to exact penance. That's not a hate crime, it's still a severe crime but it's not a hate crime. In order for it to be a hate crime certain special circumstances within the law would have to apply that's why I said, this is a stretch.
