Fell in love with Joni at age 16, in 1970 (LadiesOfTheCanyon)... Joni became the sound track of my young lif. For me, Joni is the greatest singer/songwriter/instrumentalist/painter of post-WWII popular culture; no one, not even BobDylan, comes close, imo. Saw her twice in the 70s, both outdoor venues, and followed her intensely till the 80s. Hejira is my personal fav, with Blue a distant #2. Thanx for the xmas day treat!!! Sasha Weiss' rendition of HelpMe is wonderful.

Sasha Weiss articulated so lyrically the experience of listening to Joni Mitchell. I discovered Joni Mitchell at age 16, when 'Clouds' came out. Her impact on my generation of women as we came of age was/is immeasurable. I'm fortunate to have seen her Miles of Aisles concert in Berkeley in 1974 - no rude, demanding audience there, just gifts left on the stage for her - and at the first Hollywood Bowl Playboy Jazz concert in 1979, right after the Mingus album came out. Thank you for this rich conversation. It captured the experience of this superlative artist so well.

I was at the 1974 Berkeley concert too! Afterwards, it started to snow. Joni brought the snow, I’m convinced.

Nice discussion. Joni Mitchell is one of the most unique and recognizable artists of our time. From her first album onwards she has woven a cohesive world of love, loss, fear, betrayal, courage, and incredible insight. It’s Joni’s world and she’s welcomed us into it. It’s deep and wonderful. I find this sense of world with classical composers, not so much with modern artists that are inspired by fans, celebrity, awards… It’s easy to become immersed in her world, she’s there as a friend, sister, student, teacher that shares her trials with us with deep sincerity and humility. Thanks for the discussion of your Joni memories and recent experience of seeing and hearing her live. Wow!

That performance, pure sublime. And then her upright rendition of “I’m Still Standing,” for Elton John tribute. Pure cheek.

for me, an 80 year old, this is like listening to eloquent teen chipmunks analyzing the performance of an elder lioness. Free Man in Paris is not about Joni - it's about David Geffen. for the throne chair, see Mabel Mercer, an exquisite elder performer (of Both Sides Now among other fine songs) whose genius artistry Joni did not initially suss, but who used a chair when she performed, whether in intimate clubs or vast auditoriums. may you both live into your 80's.

I heard her at a coffeehouse in Montreal in February 1968; she was touring with her first album. Big Yellow Taxi sounded great live.

So happy you could experience that. For some reference, I was at Santa Barbara County Bowl for “Shadows and Light”

There is NO SONG like "Both Sides Now". There is no version like "Both Sides, Now" 2000 with full orchestra!
