There used to be a lot of AIDS cases there (before it was treatable.) Sunset Park started out as a Scandinavian neighborhood-the hospital was even called Norwegian. Then, it gradually became Puerto Rican. The Filthy Mad Dogs ruled the streets. The shipbuilding/loading jobs at the docks disappeared. Crack cocaine took hold. When I worked there, it was Lutheran Medical Center. the coffeeshop used to be God Awful. Staffed by insane and mentally disabled folk. When I visited a few years ago, it had been greatly expanded, and nice, competent people worked there. A pleasant surprise. Hospital Cafeteria hours are never as long as the coffee shops. Things were so Bad, we physicians in training and the nurses would just order takeout. I lived in Bay Ridge, south of Sunset Park. The apartment building was old and had roaches from the garbage chutes, but the area is clean and quiet with nice restaurants.

I was born in this hospital and I still love Brooklyn. But the more times they use the word "multicultural" the more nauseous I get. NY is not, or has it ever been truly that. Everyone sticks to their own and does not intermingle like people think and what "multicultural" leads everyone to believe! Which is the real reason they use that fucking word!
