Awesome analysis. Aside from the theme of collective dreams, The Return is also a direct comment on nostalgia revivals - you can never go home, lightening will never strike twice in the same place. It deliberately sets out to frustrate the audience by denying them Cooper and the other original characters, who, when they return, are caricatures trapped in behavioural loops. They are trapped in nostalgia as the real world passes them by - eg the talk in the Road House of other characters we never get to meet. And at the end, when they return to the Palmer house, the door is answered by the person who actually owns the house in real life - this is the real world and they can never fully return to the cosy nostalgia of the fictional Twin Peaks. All of which is a much more frightening prospect than any imagined demons or nightmares.
@gnomefoam4299
@gnomefoam4299 6 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Pinkham The way I see it, the deliberate frustration and the loops served to build towards moments of profound emotion. Ed Hurley watches traffic pass by his gas station as he watches life pass him by, his frustration is our frustration. But then he gets his release and big moment with Norma in the diner. Sarah Palmer is trapped watching the same few seconds of boxing, paralysed with alcoholism and grief, which she breaks out of as she rips her face off and bites out a man’s throat. Shelley and her daughter Becky are doomed to be trapped in the same abusive cycle of relationships, which builds to the tragedy as Becky is (possibly) murdered by her boyfriend who then kills himself in the woods. And the whole Dougie Jones storyline pays off with a bang as Cooper returns in the hospital.

The very ending scene of the return is one of the most haunting in all of tv & film imo. Just this deeply unsettling denial of a happy ending & sense of things being stolen and wrong.

Late coming to this as I've been involved in a rewatch with my partner and looking for analysis videos online. It's basically all my favourite personal theories combined into one video, other than maybe the "anti-nostalgia" bit which you still kind of touch on. This deserves the number of views that snarky awful 4 hour explainer got. Subscribed!

and so i feel like twin peaks s1&2 split the stories too like how every individuals story was a violent drama but the Collective dream story was "we're a small town here's not norma's dinner". and fire walk with me shows us lauras dream/nightmare that she desperately wanted to wake up from
@hopelessent.1700
@hopelessent.1700 4 жыл бұрын
Yea especially since Fire Walk With Me alludes to Laura being intentionally killed off to become a part of the entertainment and intrigue in the show. It reminds me of that brief moment with Leo where he sees a soap opera while he “dies” and sheds a tear as he noticed a character from the show sharing that same moment on screen. Dreams are a scary thing...

When I first watched the return, it was directly after I finished watching the original and fire walk with me for the first time. When I watched the return I hated it but after watching some videos and listening to interpretations of it, I appreciate it a whole lot more. I still don’t think that the return is my cup of tea but I loved the original and the movie and I better understand the thematic meaning of the return and how it contributes to the story of twin peaks.

Liking this interpretation, and I think there's definitely something to the idea of the collective unconscious/dream to the show. I can't recommend Frosts' two companion books, The Secret History of Twin Peaks and the Final Dossier, enough for more insight into the occult and esoteric background of the story itself.

Funny thing is that I watched the first two seasons, Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces in the span of a few weeks not too long after receiving the now OOP 10 disc blu-ray box set. I actually came really late in the game for Twin Peaks and was more accustomed to Lynch's cinematic works, so seeing the first two seasons was...a bit of a shock to the system to me. Yeah it occasionally hinted and even dipped its feet into the harder edged stuff seen in Lynch's feature films, but I was a teensy bit underwhelmed by the original seasons in the sum of its parts (though I love the hell out of it when it gets weird...and yes, I even have a soft spot for the Nadine subplot in S2). Fire Walk With Me, on the other hand...holy shit. It was like sitting through a middle of the road family visit and being awarded with one on one time with a girl you absolutely love to pieces. FWWM is easily up there with Eraserhead and Blue Velvet as one of the best films in Lynch's filmography. An absolutely brutal and gut wrenching tour de force. Watching The Missing Pieces immediately afterward only enhanced my love of FWWM. ...so yeah, i'm a bit of an outlier in the TP fandom. The Return was an absolute delight, BTW. Dougie 4 Lyfe!

Mentioning hyperreality brought back Pretty Little Liars Flashbacks, which is probably the only other show I've seen take its intended audience and transform it into the surreal ever so slowly in the way of Twin Peaks. Also has a split finale, except it being a network TV show, the final episode is the happy one, whereas the existential episode is 7x19. This was so great. The collective dream makes a world of sense and places things together in a way I wanted to, but couldn't. I still need to read the final Dossier, but I think I'll be more prepared for it now.

Episode 8, by the way, no coincidence that 8 is the most revealing episode and also the infinity sign used frequently in the show, is revealing probably the biggest theme in the whole show, and a main theme in almost all of Lynch’s work, that American life changed gradually for the worst after WW II.

Absolutely worth the wait, masterful interpretation of a equally masterful series. I agree exactly that the love of Twin Peaks is in chasing the questions rather then the answers we find. Personally I saw the ending as a sad admittance of the tragic nature of the impact of Trauma itself, Dale/Richard suffered in a dream for three lifetimes to 'fix his heart' but even with the town itself purging away all it's evil and retconning Laura's tragedy itself, Laura/Carrie's pain can't be washed away no matter what and all that's left is the reminder of her last agonizing moments. For all the truly good outcomes that sympathy and reflection can achieve as Lynch shows, that final 'lights out' seems like a bitter sigh that past wounds can only be worked through then ever defeated 'like in the movies'.

David Lynch's movies are like a fever dream. They are surreal, but that is the point. David makes movies that puts the audience through an emotional journey, so that we FEEL something. In Twin Peaks, the audience is meant to feel sad about Laura Palmer's murder, the audience feels the emotions that the other characters are going through. Twin Peaks (and David's other movies) are examples where feeling is more important than knowing (as in, knowing who murdered Laura Palmer). In real life, there are murders that are not solved, but we still wonder what happened. A good artist should leave you with a feeling of wanting to know more, even if a question is left unanswered.
