Funny thing is that you might be a supersonic shredder playing hundreds of notes in a single bar but still you won't achieve that charm, groove and beat that Neil Rodgers has with very basic four chords. He is so incredible.

That's because shredders don't aim for groove and beat. Speed is their main goal, so I think to each their own.

@@Sauzeisawesome meh i guess so, thing is so many modern guitarists go for speed shredding and it became kinda soulless and bland. rhythm and groove is what made guitar in rock and roll so mesmerizing.

@Fox 狐 Yes Nile usually bars the whole chord but plucks maybe 2-3 strings at a time. The rest is percussive, muted. He talks about this technique in a master class in Paris. You’ll find it on KZbin.

Something I'm sure guitar players can relate to: When first joining my latest band, I got the usual list of songs in their repertoire to learn. It had the usual Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Billie Idol, Prince chestnuts along with newer top 40 stuff. When I started working on Get Lucky I thought "Great! an easy four chord song" until I really tried to learn it...........Long story short, far and away the most difficult song on the list.
@marcelop2088
@marcelop2088 3 жыл бұрын
As a rock/metalhead guitarist I'm 100% with you on this. Listened to this song once and thought. "OK, no difficult solos. Should be easy". Oh boy I was wrong. Still today I sound like a robot playing it, close to this guy...
@TheGrandmaMoses
@TheGrandmaMoses 3 жыл бұрын
Doing cover bands myself, I never found this one to be overly taxing. I just do the first four 3note groups as triplets, then add something on that one beat where you can do whatever you want before going into the triplets again. I still think that stuff like Skynyrd or, you said it, Van Halen is much harder to reproduce on stage - not least of all you need much more stuff to reproduce a close tone than just a Strat into a Fender amp like with Nile, be it gear-wise or be it skill-wise. That said, the ones I'm having most trouble getting to 100% with are the shuffled unplugged 'Layla' and the fast run ( you know which one I'm talking about! ) of Sweet Child O' Mine. Still, I can feel where you're coming from, covering Nile is never easy and literally no one can claim to have done it perfectly, he's just that good at funk. Just get close and be happy is what I'm saying to myself to not get mad at never reaching his particular groove...we also do some 90s HipHop medleys with things like Mo' Money, Mo' Problems and he is sampled everywhere ( the song is basically I'm Coming Out on repeat ), so just get as close as you can, keep that right hand moving and realize you can never be as good as him - and you're gucci. Cover band audiences won't care as long as you make them dance with a Nile song, which works every time. But not because of you - it's the bass and the drums interlocking that are the real stars of this whole Nile Rodgers show, the actual guitar funk work is just clutter ( in my mind! ). And I'm pretty sure Nile himself would agree with that assessment.

I spent the vast majority of my formative years learning to shred and play solos. Took me years to recognize that it's all about the groove, the song, the rhythm. Solos for the most part don't even exist these days, but even in their heyday they were a small portion of the song. Nile is an absolute master of the groove, the vibe, the rhythm and the feel. His playing Makes you want to dance! It just feels incredible...I could listen to him play all day and never get bored even he was basically on repeat. Legend.

Nile says you gotta use thin picks for scratching and I use mediums, so I got me a pack of thins, and he's right. Eric Blackmon has an excellent set of tutorials on this channel, and he specializes in funk, soul and the blues. I recommend him for lessons if you're intermediate in skill level.
