The 80's had their ups and downs. It wasn't perfect. I think of all the good times and forget the bad, but I would give my left nut to go back in time to relive it all over again. creepy sounds in the verse, more upbeat in the chorus and the mix is great, the song writing is great. Everything sounds like it fits like a glove and that vid.... man, the effects they added to his singing in the verse were so subtle but you could tell it had some fast parts like they filmed at diff speed. This was right before MTV so this vid ballooned these guys way, way up. Very unusual also to change from minor to major inside the verse back and forth. That's very rare. Usually people start minor then once they switch to major they stay there a while like maybe an entire chorus then verse is minor. Here, 2 lines min, next 2 major. I dont' think I've ever heard that in any other rock or pop song.

The chorus was how I was able to find the song. Then I was surprised to learn it was recorded in the fall of 1979.

My brother and I went to see Neil Finn in Austin, TX. New Zealand is no doubt proud of this talent. He was unbelievable. In Austin we get a LOT of great bands, but his show really stands out to me. Also, very humble personable guy. Hats off to the Finn brothers, Split Enz, and New Zealand. What a talented phenom.

I love that the verses are made to sound uneasy and anxious; the 007 style muted guitar riff, the Prophet-5 synthesizer lead in the background, punctuating every sentence with a ghostly, distant howl. It's all so suspenseful and really makes me feel like I am alone in my room, lamenting over my love for someone, still paranoid and damaged from a previous relationship; just not trusting enough yet. Then the chorus kicks in all Elvis Costello style, with poppy organ and major chords, and Neil starts apologizing, stumbling over his words to the girl he loves. She wonders why he is so anxious and wound up over what she might be doing without him, behind his back, or when she doesn't answer the phone. "I don't know why sometimes I get frightened." he says, and then seeks reassurance "Tell me you're not lying". This is what makes a song fantastic. It all lines up! The sound, the lyrics, and the topic are all tightly nit; the tone of the music matches the mood of the lyrics, and it all comes together in a catchy song. I'm sure a lot of us have been in that jealous relationship, where you don't trust your lover because you think they're way out of your league, and could have anyone, so whenever you're left alone, you begin to ruminate over how they're probably not interested in you. "Why would she want to be with me, when she could have anyone?"

1980, duel edged sword for me. I graduated from high school, however; I met my first wife that last year in school. The rest of '80 was pretty great with 4 mostly shitty years following. I did become a father in '82 though. She was the bomb to anyone that knew her (she passed 5 weeks ago). Not even her ex's hate her, how does that happen? I hate the hell out of my ex's.

My daughter Jacqui, my only child, extended the lives of at least 5 people, one who was hours from death. I couldn't be more proud of her. Thank you for your kind words, it's very touching and appreciated. To be honest, it's substantially easier to type those words than it is to actually speak them out loud. I didn't really think either way about the song, wasn't sure if I really liked the song, but there was a cute strawberry blonde girl that I had seen before but didn't know her. She said "OMG, I love that song". If she loved it, then I loved it! I was so in love with her, I couldn't hear this song without thinking of her. I bought the record and played the song everyday.
