Grew up in the hood, where everyone around was into rap and soul music! My brother was a rare breed! He was listening to this, a fan of Andy Gibbs, The Police, Phil Colins, Billy Idol! He exposed me and my mom to other great music that was out there and not known of within our Black community during the 80's!

Honestly let’s be real why was the 80’s so good for music? Like we can’t even compare modern music to the 80’s due to the massive quality difference.
@datboin8669
@datboin8669 7 ай бұрын
its because people back then just did whatever they wanted, such as this guy who made a song about wearing sunglasses at night. Its silly, but it was fun for him to do, and its fun for us to listen to. Nowadays people only get famous because they pay for more advertisement, while those with real talent remain unknown.
@alternateaccount6913
@alternateaccount6913 6 ай бұрын
Cause people only remember the good stuff from the 80's. Give it 20-30 years and only the songs that were really stand out will be remembered from the 2020s and late 2010s

I feel like it was an era wear music production was starting to get really good in terms of technology but it still wasn't good enough to make untalented people sound good.
@Watcher413
@Watcher413 6 ай бұрын
@@erikcarrillo7378 yeah autotune was NOT the industry standard as it is nowadays. None the less though look at some of the bigger artist of today they don’t have a good song at all and haven’t for quite awhile. For example let’s look at Justin Bieber at first love him or hate him he had a few songs that where catchy and I could see why teen girls would like him but his last few albums are complete trash and why is anyone listening to him? Look at an older artist like Rod Stewart he was making decent music his entire career. Every decade has quality songs even if it’s one hit wonders but last 10 years tell me a song that gets everyone pumped up? Start singing Sherry or Sweet Caroline most people get behind that but last 10 years? No song even compares. It’s hard for me to believe there isn’t any good musicians that can break the barriers for a generation. Even the 2000’s had a few decent songs but that’s when I noticed the decline of decent music in general.

I'm a musician and a fan of old school metal and classic rock. I was flipping channels on the radio in my truck the other day and this song had just started. I thought "hmm, I've heard this before I think". I cranked it on my badass stereo system and when it was over I realized what an awesome song it was. Everything about this song is almost perfect. I think he was only about 19 when he recorded this too. What a talented man he is.

As a kid, when I lived in Tampa Fl, my family had to temporarily move in with a relative. The stay was so short that I can't remember the school I attended, but I was befriended by a short, kind of chubby black girl on the bus ride home that day, and she invited me over to her house. I went over to her home, although I knew I would get in a lot of trouble for entering someone home, my mom didn't know. We talked about songs and artists we liked, and of course, most of our songs were from the African American culture. She introduced me to many songs from the caucasian culture that I was oblivious to, which included this song. I will never forget ....she turned her back to me and suddenly turned around with black sunglasses on and started to sing this song, which was her favorite. I was hooked, we sang this song over and over again. Then I had to go home. What I didn't know that the friendship we just established that day was brief, so brief that I would go home to find out we were moving again that weekend, and I would never see her again. So, I will use this moment to thank the black wearing the sunglasses wanting to be my friend, and introducing me to great music.

@joshfike6464
@joshfike6464 3 жыл бұрын
I half agree, yes it’s about her deceiving, but wearing sunglasses at night is a phrase which is just about equivalent to “turning a blind eye”. He even says “I keep my sunglasses on at night... so that I can see the light” the light symbolizing the good memories/feelings of the relationship. Following this train of thought, the lyrics is the character standing up to her. But ofc this is just my interpretation

Here's a little background on this iconic 80's song: Corey Hart was a bit of an anomaly when he burst onto the scene in America with “Sunglasses at Night.” He was just 21 years old at the time, but he seemed much more like a veteran in terms of his clear vision for how he wanted to sound and his already-sharp songwriting. Success followed along with that artistic confidence, as he churned out seven Top 30 hits in the U.S. in a span of just three years, with “Sunglasses at Night” leading the pack as the first single off his 1983 album First Offense. (The song became a hit in ’84.) Hart’s immediate hot streak was a byproduct of a performance career in his native Canada that stretched back almost a decade before all that success. Maybe that experience was what gave him the confidence to insist that he be given full artistic control over his music, even on his debut. He recorded most of the album in London in late 1982 and early 1983. In fact, it looked like the album was complete, until a stroke of inspiration convinced Hart to ask to include one more song. That song turned out to be “Sunglasses at Night.” As mentioned above, Hart was pretty much finished with First Offense, but he was always writing and demoing new material even in the waning stages of the process. One of those demos was based on the phrase “My Cigarette is Wet,” a phrase whose usefulness came mostly in terms of the melody that it inspired. While in England recording the album, Hart had purchased a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses, the classic brand that had become iconic again in the ’80s. But the sun hadn’t shined much in England to give him an opportunity to show them off. When he got back to Canada, he started wearing them more, and that’s when the phrase I wear my sunglasses at night came to him. He headed back into the studio and attached it to the “My Cigarette Is Wet” demo, and a hit was born. Yes, Hart immediately knew it was a smash, as he told this author for the book Playing Back the ’80s: A Decade of Unstoppable Hits: “I intuitively thought that the song was going to be a hit and I wholeheartedly believed. I was also very young, naive, and idealistic. I suppose this part of the formula actually played in my favor because I never factored in failure as a viable option.” What is the Meaning of “Sunglasses at Night”? It’s impressive in listening to “Sunglasses at Night” to hear just how confident Corey Hart was as a songwriter in including dark themes and striking lyrics that evoke so much without spelling everything out. The basic gist of the song is the narrator is telling his girl that her deceptive practices aren’t unnoticed, as the shades are just a symbol of his powers of insight and intuition. Hart’s vocals are also right on point with the themes of the lyrics, all mysterious and insinuating in the verses, and then potent and defiant in the choruses, especially on the immortal line: Don’t switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no. Her storylines are well-known to him, as deceptive as she thinks she might be: And I wear my sunglasses at night / So I can, so I can / See the light that’s right before my eyes. “Sunglasses at Night” was so distinctive and forceful it seemed as if Corey Hart bypassed the teen idol phase of his career (legions of female fans notwithstanding) and stepped onto the scene as an artist of decisiveness and import. Good thing he didn’t base his London purchase on utility rather than style. “Umbrellas at Night” just isn’t quite as catchy. Source: American Songwriter

One of the first songs to really work the effect of stereo sound. It may be taken for granted by anyone born in the last 40 years, but at the time it was really novel, and this song made the most of it.

Corey Hart wears his sunglasses at night so he can: -Watch you weave then breathe your story lines. -Keep track of the visions in his eyes. -Forget his name while you collect your claim. -See the light that's right before his eyes.
