I was working doing my day shift at an abattoir in Southland NZ in 2000, this song was playing blaring off through the speakers. I was enjoying it and asked my fellow workers about the name of the band and it's singer. Nobody seemed to know then, some said it was Big River Band. Many years later in Australia only now I knew it is the Chisels. Love this song, band and artist immensely.

Dhuan Absa An abattoir !? How in Christ’s name could you have ‘ worked ‘ willingly in a murder-hole of that sort !? I’ve done all manner of the dullest and noggin-numbing jobs in the bush, but never, ever agreed to taking wages for the grotty and gruesome butchering of helpless creatures. Bugger all regard, on my part, for Aussie notions of ‘ grit ‘ and ‘ the coal face ‘.

Albert Arthur Parsnips. Somebody has to do the job. I'm just the very few at the beginning of the chain. Hundreds more workers involved till the meat arrived at the overseas destinations or local supermarkets, bro. The industry give employment to thousands of people, who want to work, great income for the meat companies and revenues to Australia and NZ. What is wrong with that?

Albert Arthur Parsnips . I am sure you're not a vegan yourself. So finish up your steak, drink your beer and SHUT UP!
@albertarthurparsnips5141
@albertarthurparsnips5141 5 жыл бұрын
Dhuan Absa ‘ Shut up ‘ !? On what grounds ? That you’re peeved and appalled ? Hardly the most solid of foundations, I’m afraid. I could not give a proverbial toss with regard to your wafer-weighted ‘ excuse ‘ for needs for employment amongst a doubtlessly needy workforce. Pardon my swank, posh, elitist presumption,.but in years of desperate searches for gainful employment in the 90S, it’d have been , even then, beyond the original pale for me to accept a wage to batter and harass the bodies, and slit the throats, of mere children for a few quid. And, no, I’m by means inclined to obey any crude and vulgar yelps from YOUR likes to ‘ shut up ‘, sport. You have Buckley’s chance of popping a gag on my cake hole, cobber.

Yes of course there is and this is one such example of well thought out guitar parts in the body of the song, a guitar lick that hooks the listener's interest before the the verses and a well constructed outro guitar solo. What Ian Moss played serves the song, without being over the top flashy and without outstaying his welcome. Getting the job done with taste.

Apologies if this is addressed in the other 976 comments, but is that Garry McDonald in the kitchen? On a more serious note, Ian Moss' phrasing and note selection is beyond reproach. Also Jimmy's range and emotive vocal phrasing is sublime. Thank you Steve Prestwich (RIP) for such an amazing song, that's stayed with me all these years.

This song reminds me of the end of the Bondi Lifesaver when John and Kimmy Parks marriage broke down the place was sold and the doors finally closed . So many bands kicked off there, the people the fun , Ray Arnold keeping the crowd under control and the bands running amok in the green room .Long live Australian rock n roll and the memories.

Let me start by saying, I wasn't a Cold Chisel fan growing up.I knew of their songs as a child/young teen, but was more into Midnight Oil and INXS when it came to Australian Rock. I have learnt to appreciate their greatness over the span of a few decades. It's only an opinion of course, but I believe this is one of the best Australian songs of all time. Certainly, in terms of love songs, I can't think of one better ! The guitar solo intro/outro are out of this world, and Barnsey's vocals are incredible in this. I even enjoy the understated nature of the film clip. Extraordinary music !
