Who remembers the Australian Schoolboy Rugby Team of the late seventies? The 1979 squad went on into football folklore. It was chocka block full of talent, the next ten to fifteen years of both the Ozzie Rugby League and Rugby Teams were comprised of most of that squad that simply HAS to be the Greatest EVER School Boy national team of ANY country. That year they went on to win the International Team of the Year award. The Award was open to ANY sports team in ANY sport in the entire world. Not a bad legend. Wally Lewis and Mick O'Connor and the great Ella brothers were among the schoolboy team.
@brucie-of-bangor5282 жыл бұрын
And the Ella's, O'Connor, Tony Melrose, Michael Hawker, Chris Roche, Tony D'Arcy, Shane Nightingale and Dominic Vaughan all went on to be Wallabies. Players who missed the tour included Steve Cutler, Lloyd Walker and Eddie Jones. it was a truly great side coached by Randwick's Geoff Mould. They came at a time when Australian Rugby was in the doldrums and set the national side up for a golden era that culminated in 2 world cups in 1991 and 1999. W really need another 1977/78 schoolboys side right now.

@@brucie-of-bangor528 We're not going to get another great schoolboys side. Brisbane Grammar school just for example...with its proud, rich history and culture of sport including Rugby, is now almost wall to wall Chinamen and Indians. You know...because Australia needs to grow fiscally and because an Australian now is an economic unit of consumption and production. That's as far as any definition of an Australian can get now. Simply an economic unit. If we did get a great schoolboys team today they'd all be Fijian or south sea islanders with names you couldn't pronounce. And they'd spend their entire lives bemoaning traditional Australians as racist bigots. And most people in this country would agree with them.

So much better to watch than today's RL. Players today are too fit, too strong, too skillful and too well coached. It's magnificently boring compared to the 80s. Don't forget all the GB players would be turning up to work at building sites, factories and the like come Monday morning.

This is why I love rugby league. We fell out for a while in the last decade but the new rules and lots of tries has bought me back. Pity I can’t say the same for cricket. Bring back DK and Thommo! May as well chuck in World Championship Wrestling while I’m at it.

No, I find the NRL over the last few years to be utterly boring. They have fooled around with the rules and it is now nothing like this particular game or games of that era.

"They carved 'em up!" How can you not like the performance from the Oz team? The English probably would have liked Terry Lamb. Can't think of one player who didn't have a great game but especially Cleal, Dowling, Sterlo and O'Connor. Compare this game to the grubby professional tactics that have been introduced to the game by one nameless club in particular. As well as "captain's call ' , the third umpire and other garbage.

Does anyone know the game roughly from this era where the Kangaroos are playing GB or maybe it was NZ and Wally Lewis is about 10 or 15 out and he's swamped by defenders trying to put him down...but he keeps going toward the line...then one of the tacklers starts upper cutting him to the head but Wally still keeps going and eventually scores a great try with like 4 or 5 tacklers on him? I think he scores the try or he gets the penalty or something. Anyway...tough as an old boot was the King.

The Kangaroos were special. Meninga was a sub? Also, how much bigger did Meaning get between this tour and the 1990 tour.
@michaelboyce7079Ай бұрын
A lot of people in Australia didn't think Meninga was playing well enough to be selected for the '86 tour. His club form was pretty ordinary and he had a quiet Origin series. I've always wondered if he got the nod because he was such a huge drawcard in '82 - most of the English crowds had never seen such big, fast and mobile centre as big Mel before.
