Totally agree, they say the -players now are fit but the rules are very different from back then which I believe makes this team unbelievable

I remember my uncle waking me up to watch the Australian team. I was playing junior league with my brother and cousin as a kid. Great Memories
@johncater7861 Жыл бұрын
Talking about Oz, the ball is thrown around like a hot potato, unlike the attack and defensive set plays of league in 2022. The players seem to play ad lib on instinct, always looking to pass, always backing up. Exciting and entertaining unlike the football in 2022 I feel.

The difference is nowadays you have backs that are bigger than the forwards 20 years ago and faster than the backs.

This is like the 2 teams playing in a time zone... GB in the 70s - slow, concentrating on scrums, mixing it and the Kangaroos - 80s open, athletic, professional football!

@J G rugby league is the greatest sport on Planet Earth with 4.5 Billion fans and massively popular in over 240 countries including dependencies. soccer/football is a micro sport on the global stage popular in only 4 countries. Its a minority sport in the UK, France, Lebanon, Iraq etc. rugby league will be and still is the number 1 sport in Australia and NZ by 2050

Ah, the good old days, like early motor racing, this era of Rugby League was easily the best to watch. Variety in the build, size and different strengths of the players.

And how can you not remember ONE Mr Wally Lewis who didn't get picked as a reserve until the next test
@GreenDistantStar Жыл бұрын
@@stevenguegens9516 despite him being a Queenslander, Wally Lewis was the best all-round Rugby League player I've ever seen. He could do everything. Brilliant in attack, solid in defence, and he read a game better than anyone. He could change a game in the blink of an eye, which he often did against my beloved Blues. He made excellent players look like hacks, he was indeed The King.

I always remember this game for the disgusting late and high shot of fairburn on prop craig young, swinging arm to his throat and i bet the idiot was proud of himself. As a kiwi i always admired the ozzies for their discipline and professionalism despite being on the receiving end of plenty of cheap shots from both the poms and the kiwis

It really is hard to pick a favorite from that era. From 1978 to 1990 the Kangaroo teams just oozed talent and strength.

Thanks for uploadng these. I made the tragic mistake of watching another of your uploads just before I switched on the TV to watch St George vs the Tigers recently and was horrified by the latest game. Soft, formulaic and the idea that more points equals more entertainment remains tragically wrong. Give me RL from the 50s through to the 90s any day! Great to see Laurie Nichols up there shadow boxing in the stand. I met him once at Cooma RSL when I was on an end of season trip for The Entrance Tigers. A lovely bloke.

George Fairbairn, the GB fullback, committed at least 3 acts of foul play any one of which should have been a send-off. He stuck out his boots as Meninga went in for his try. At 13:04 he hit Wayne Pearce with a late high elbow to the head and did the same to Craig Young as you pointed out. Nothing but a dirty thug who was regarded as a legend at his club.

The English always seem obsessed with being rough & ready...punches and swinging arms etc...I don't doubt they are hard guys..but it's not enough. Australian club Rugby League is fast & athletic and they can mix it if need be but they also know it's not how you get results. Not in the long run anyway. Now that guys like the Burgess brothers play in the NRL they are getting much better. With Wayne Bennett as coach they almost won the last World Cup

Ah the old NSW and Queensland vs Yorkshire and Lancashire. AKA Aus vs GB. But some great players. Still before the 4 point try so they still had stupid boring 2 point penalty goals , as at the beginning. Thankfully changed not long after. Rugby union still hasn’t learned. Completely ridiculous points system.
