I'm probably not the first to mention this, but O Brother is a modern re-telling of the poem "The Odyssey" by Homer. If you read it in high school or college literature, you may recognize George Clooney's Everett as Odysseus, making his way home after the Trojan War but thought dead. You have John Goodman's Big Dan as the Cyclops, you have the blind man's prophecy, the three sirens, on and on. You don't have to read The Odyssey to appreciate O Brother, but if you do you'll appreciate both so much more.

Even better, though referred to as Everett, Clooney first introduces himself as Ulysses Everett McGill. As you said, the story of the Odyssey is about him returning to his wife and family, only to find her surrounded by suitors wanting to marry her for Odysseus' kingdom and fortune. Before approaching his wife he disguises himself as an elderly man with a long white beard to defeat the suitors.

Fun Fact: George Clooney sent the script and a recorder to his southern preacher grandpa to read all of his lines, so he can learn the script without reading it and also to learn the accent authentically. His grandpa started the recording with, "well George I don't know if we talk like this, but I'll give it a go." After they wrapped the movie, Ethan Coen asked him why he removed all the curse words. His grandpa had switched all the curses with "darn tootin" and other PG phrases. So his grandpa is technically one of the only people to edit a Coen brothers script. Also, I love how they make Delmar's character consistent after he gets baptized. You can tell really did believe what happened there and tried the rest of the movie to do his best.

Love this movie! First off, the blues guitar player Tommy Johnson, that''s supposed to be the famous blues man Robert Johnson, who allegedly sold his soul to the devil at a Mississippi crossroads at midnight for his skill at guitar. But notice how Tommy tells the boys, "the devil is white, as white as you folks, with empty eyes and a big hollow voice, and he loves to travel with a mean ol' hound!" Look at the cop chasing them: black sunglasses, never see his eyes, travels with a bloodhound, and almost claims their souls at the end!

One of my favorite movies. Fun fact: although Clooney practiced singing, the Coens decided to overdub him with bluegrass singer Dan Tyminski. Tim Blake Nelson, however, did his own vocals for "In the Jailhouse Now" and won a Grammy along with the other performers for Album of the Year.

Tim Blake Nelson has sang in several movies...if you get the chance, Clooney reciting the story of how he "lost" the singing duties for the movie is hilarious...his aunt is, of course, famed and celebrated singer Rosemary Clooney who, incidentally was twice married to actor Jose Ferrer, making their son, famed actor Miguel Ferrer, George Clooney's cousin...anyway, there was a theory that because he was Rosemary's nephew, he'd be able to sing, as well...until he actually did...

I was an extra in the film Astronaut Farmer. Tim Blake Nelson (Delmar) was in it. I remember sitting for hours with no one giving me a glance. At some point, Tim came to me and asked if I was hungry. He also asked if I smoked, which I I did at the time. About 20 minutes later, he returned with a sandwich, a Coke, and a pack of Camels. He's an awesome guy.

For some reason though the more I heard it, the more I really grew to appreciate it. There's something so simple and so pure about this era of music. The 3 sirens singing go to sleep little baby were voiced by Gillian Welch, Alison Krauss and EmmyLou Harris. Lots of great musicians made cameos in the movie too. Gillian Welch was a customer in the record store. Dan Tyminski was playing mandolin in one of the music scenes. The soundtrack, such a great part of this movie, was produced by T Bone Burnett and won Grammys for Best Movie Soundtrack and Best Album of 2002. Ironically it did this despite getting very little airplay on commercial radio, as by the early 2000s so many commercial stations across the country had been purchased by entertainment corporations that had strict formats and playlists. The O Brother soundtrack didn't fit well in any of the standard formats so the only public airplay it got was on college stations and public radio.

I was born in the mid 50's so my early radio was 60's and 70's where most stations were locally owned, or part of a small regional chain. They played what the DJ's wanted and the genre changed over the course of the day (think WKRP in Cincinnati). Because of that, the Billboard Top 40 included all kinds of music: rock, pop, bubblegum, R&B, Motown, standards, country, etc. and you could call in your request which is how some songs became popular. The late 60's-mid 70's was the era of AOR (Album Oriented Rock) where stations would play the album versions of songs that were too long for regular radio (a few, like Bohemian Rhapsody at 6 minutes, snuck in) and bands that just were not Top 40 friendly like Pink Floyd. Late 70's into the 80's was when radio slowly became more and more corporate and each station had its own niche', which is why you can only find country on a country station, pop on pop, Classic Rock, etc. Growing up listening to all kinds of music because it was our only choice was actually good for us. I often fell asleep during the Classical music segment from 10pm-2am Saturday nights.

Actor Charles Durning who played the Governor who came on stage and pardoned the boys, was a highly decorated soldier of WWII. He was also one of the 50(?) soldiers to survive the Malmedy Massacre that occurred during the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944. German SS troops, having captured a unit of American soldiers, placed them in a snow covered field and machine gunned them. Some survived by playing dead. Many were killed.

The story of the Blues legend Robert Johnson selling his soul at the crossroads to get famous was one he told himself. It's been rumored that BB King also went to the same crossroads before he got famous.

They turned The Odyssey by Homer into something entertaining for the masses. I’m so thankful. That book bored me to tears in high school. Lol The story of Tommy selling his soul to the Devil at the crossroads is based on the life of real life blues musician Robert Johnson. It’s canon that Johnson sold his soul to Satan in order to play his guitar better. It’s an interesting story to look up and read! Absolutely loved y’alls reactions and commentary as always!

It was such a joy watching this with you. You got the Coen Brothers' brand of humor, which is great! :)) If you enjoyed this movie (and music) from them, then you'll LOVE "The Ladykillers". The movie is set in the South and it's filled wall-to-wall with Gospel music. It has Tom Hanks in one of his funniest performances ever. And going toe-to-toe with Hanks is the most adorable black grandma (Irma P. Hall) you'll ever see in a movie. She's the 'lady' in "ladykillers' and she's a handful, lol! The movie is a hoot and another all-time Coen Brothers favorite in my family. :))

Johnson "the most important blues singer that ever lived." Johnson had a tremendous desire to become a great blues musician. One of the legends often told says that Johnson was instructed to take his guitar to a crossroad near Dockery Plantation at midnight. There he was met by a large black man (the Devil) who took the guitar and tuned it. The Devil played a few songs and then returned the guitar to Johnson, giving him mastery of the instrument. This story of a deal with the Devil at the crossroads mirrors the legend of Faust. In exchange for his soul, Johnson was able to create the blues for which he became famous.

The very last shot of the movie showed an old wooden bridge over the railroad. That bridge is real, still exist in Edwards, Mississippi today. I drove over that bridge many times on my way to college at Raymond, Mississippi. When this movie first came out everyone I knew loved pointing out how that was the bridge in Edwards.

What happened to Homer at the end during the Soggy performance is known as being “run out of town on a rail” and was a real thing, if made a bit more performative in this depiction of it 😂

That ridding of Homer Stokes was done by riding him out of town on the rail. That was a common practice. They also used to tar and feather them before the rail showed up.

Watching this I could tell BJ grew up in the country, me too BJ. I grew up in the deep South working on a farm for part of my childhood and teenage years. I've lived in a Western state for the last 20 years, but this movie takes me back to my home state, even seeing those big fields full of tobacco and cotton. I love the music in this film, bought the soundtrack too.

this story is ancient its so cool....if you ever read The Odyssey, its based off that book. I had to read it twice, once for middle school and then again in College for my Philosophy class. I didn't connect this movie to the book until I seen the scene with the Sirens at the river. John Goodman plying the role of the cyclops was pretty awesome.
