This is one of the best traditional Advent hymns, and unlike many of our hymns is Catholic in origin. I remember some years ago, hearing a Christmas version of this hymn with the chorus changed to Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, is born to save thee, Israel!

Going to a Catholic school we sang this song every morning in class before school started during advent. It has become a staple in my advent life. I still listen and sing this everyday during advent 50 years later.
