Are you sure he was playing the organ or just sitting on the keys? I like church organ music in some styles, but this type seems overdone and noisy. It's like it's a serious goal for this organist to use all ten fingers at once and make any one note indiscernible.

this is actually pretty tame by notre dame de paris standards; you must be new.

Even if so, I've just heard that the organ was a concession and was hesitantly allowed into Catholic liturgies, and I'm sure that the original churchman who made that decision would not have let organs into the Mass if they had known that the style would evolve to be this chaotic. It was the same with polyphony; Catholic leaders wanted liturgical music to be soothing, conducive to contemplative prayer, and clearly intelligible, and certain polyphonic styles threaten that notion and thus polyphony was only hesitantly allowed. That is why the preference has always been given to, and always will be given to Gregorian chant.

And I would really rather not hear music like this in any Tridentine Mass, which are the Masses I try to go to.

but this is the procession for easter! if ever there were a feast day where one would want to shake and stir the souls of those in attendance, surely this is it! furthermore, even though this is a novus ordo mass, the 'missa de angelis' is used for the sung parts of the mass anyways. chant is well loved at notre dame, but so is the bombastic french school of improvisation. the beauty of one does not negate that of the other.
