I remember Louise so well! When I first came to Riverside in 1969 she was basically retired, but came back a few times, and was always generous and supportive of young singers, like me!

I listen to this every Christmas. I have the Virgil Fox CD. That high note is spine chilling but then she descends from it perfectly. It's like watching a gymnast do a perfect landing after a perfect performance. This is actually so intense for me, I only listen once privately because it's so emotional for me. I'll play it for other people who haven't heard it before. The combination of her voice and a massive pipe organ is just unbelievable. I want to say awesome but the word is overused today and has no meaning. This performance leaves me choked up and speechless. My God when she hits and holds the high note and the organ swells to catch up with her. Flat fucking unbelievable.

Donald, God bless you for posting Louise's memorable performance of this old chestnut. It, to me, is THE DEFINITIVE performance. Others may not know that she was a soloist with the Robert Shaw Chorale for years. her solos are evident on their Christmas and Folk Song albums. I met one of her students when I worked at the American Embassy in Beijing. She was flabbergasted that I knew that voice. Hopefully, others will come to know and appreciate that wonderful talent.
