People don't understand why the high B is a game changer in this song. Any high voice can sing it with a Bb, but B slots differently in the vocal register and to nail it perfectly and precisely is astonishing. Phelps sings it with high notes that are all in the higher register which actually decreases the difficulty, however well the notes come out.

Everyone is raving about Phelps C# as it was spectacular. But Bjorlings high was big, full and ringing. One of the best opera voices of all time. Most all of these guys have great voices. But many are in another category outside of Bjorling, Pavarotti and Caruso. These guys don't need microphones. Phelps probably could have been on that stage but he chose a different path.

Every time I hear David Phelps’ voice, I imagine an Angel on earth singing, and that it may be how we all sound in heaven. Can you imagine millions of people with a voice like that! The reason why his version is the best is because he sings with such conviction. He BELIEVES what he sings, and it’s his assignment to bring Jesus to the world. None of the others sang with meaning. @@cubablue602 are you joking?
@ttbass8972 жыл бұрын
@@cubablue602 Jussi is amazing but that is comparing apples and oranges. The measure of a voice is not "tremor or shimmer" (which is called vibrato) because you can also purposefully sing it straight-tone for effect (think more modern, Whitney or Maria). Phelps sings with vibrato on almost all the high notes but especially the C# which he covers (classical sound). He is classically trained, just isn't an opera singer. Lack of amplication is also not a requisite. It is just a fact of modern music. Modern concert halls are designed with sound systems, opera halls are designed with acoustics in mind. Besides that, Phelps is university trained and could easily fill a theater without a mic.

There are many, many versions of this song on record. Many opera singers beside Bjorling have recorded it, and many could be considered the equal of Bjorling, depending on personal preference for a voice, which is what it comes down to anyway, in the end. If someone likes a particular voice, that's the one they will go to. My personal favourite is by the American tenor, Jan Peerce, but I don't say it is better than Bjorling's version, just my preference. There have been some appalling 'pop singer' versions, which mangle both the melody and the lyrics, but no doubt they are liked by many. Each to his own.

I really don't agree. David Phelps is a good singer and his version of O Holy Night is what I would call a pop version. So what if he pushed the register up a note or whatever at the end. He is simple not in the same class as those magnificently trained voices of the great opera singers like Pavarotti, Caruso and most wonderful of all, Jussi Bjorling, the great Swedish tenor whose version O Helga Natt is the supreme example of how this beautiful hymn should be sung.

Bjoerling by light years. The top B4 just SHAKES for to the core. It's bright, round but piercing at the same time, absolutely no loss of core in the sound, ideal vibrato action, and replete with that unmistakable Bjorlingesque "shine" he was so renouned for. On the pop side, the lead tenor in Homefree phrased gorgeously and delivered a beautiful clear top B4 but also phrased exquisitely and tastefully going into it and coming off of it although he couldn't quite match Bjoerling's phrasing. (Nobody has.) Hometown just sounded to juvenile with a performance directed at 13-year-old girls. There's just something I find off-putting about David Phelps I can't quite put my finger on, except to say every time I hear him, it feels like he's working extra hard to show off his technical brilliance and gives you a heaping helping of the stratospheric notes. It feels like the ice skater who has all kinds of great jumps and spins but can't quite put together a coherent program to save his life, so they just try to hit you with more technical brilliance. Luciano Pavarotti is quite a bit past his prime here, and that once brilliant open soaring voice sounds tired, pushed and overly covered. You really need to hear the maestro prior to 1985 to get a real sense of his greatness. David Miller of Il Divo delivers a better- than-average top B-flat 4, but what has always impressed me about David both here and in the opera house is his splendid command of the messa da voce in the phrase coming off the top note. Wonderful underrated lyric tenor.
