What if the equation is magnesium oxide+nitric acid, how are we going to balance charges b/w them?

When writing a chemical eqn, there should not be any charges appearing. It will be simply: MgO + 2HNO3 --> Mg(NO3)2 + H2O

If you are referring to the ionic eqn, do note that MgO is insoluble. Hence the eqn would be: MgO(s) + 2H+(aq) --> Mg2+(aq) + H2O(l). Notice the charges are balanced i.e. 2+ on both sides
