What the people in the video are doing is known as "kata". It is pattern practice, which means they are executing prearranged paired forms that are passed down from generation to another, essentially unaltered throughout the centuries. Kata is not only about practical fighting techniques but instead its main purpose is to educate the student in the essence of the school's teachings: timing, distancing, footwork, logic etc. So it's not just a random "demo" but a routine practice for these people.

Battles were won due to the archers, and the spear men. When many soldiers would leave a town/village/whatever, many of the women left behind would have naginata (sometimes yari) to use if an attack was to befall the town. It's a relatively easy weapon to kill with. Even my novice friends have taken on 3 katana with one naginata. It's exhausting, but it's effective.

True. Naginata were, pound for pound, the most effective blade weapons in Japanese history. Only disadvantage was you couldn't carry them around with you everywhere, so they were no good as status symbols and in off-battlefield duels. That's why the katana didn't become the symbol for the samurai until much later, and it was never their primary weapon in battlefield combat. Why would it be? The old name for Bushido was "the way of the horse and bow", and that was absolutely the first thing you learned. If actually on campaign, and if a samurai had the money, they'd often carry a bow and a quiver on their back, the daisho set in their belt, and a yari or naginata under one arm. Plus they all had horses so the weight wasn't an issue. That gave them a HELL of a lot of versatility.

basic tactics are: for spear (naginata)- keeping long distance for sword- gaining close distance if warrior is able to fight like that he will have bigger chances. Naginata advantage is able to cut with bigger force which could be important and charging with spear(nagi) is usually more deadly due to weapon range, Weapon technology is similar in whole world, Japanese naginata, Chinese guan dao, European glaive, the same situation with other types of spears and swords, so tactics are universal.

Spears were used way more often than naginata on the battlefields of medieval Japan. You can field a unit of infantry armed with spears and get them to fight as a coherent group rather than fielding a group of infantry armed with naginata.

Video demonstrates Until Death Do Us Part's point regarding weapon's length. Longer (naginata) means more coverage in the offensive and shorter (katana) provides quicker reaction time plus a more narrow range in terms of defense.

Agree. I think the demo is to show that what can Onaginata achieves even its length is no longer an advantage but at close range may even be a liability. It may demand a different set of skills compared to the situation when the range is far.

Naginata attacks can utilize Centrifugal force, so it was a favorite weapon for Samurai class women.

7:45 is a beautiful kill. Cutting up like that feels so awkward but I'm sure you can get a lot of power and swiftness behind it with practice.

5:19. I like that. Though I almost get the feeling that "Naginata" is just a tad to long for her. Not judging, just looks like it is a tad awkward for her at times.

its not so much thats its awkward, more that the large size of it means she has to swing it slowly and carefully as to not risk hurting her partner

I wonder what is the O-naginata's size? I know only that the overall length of Naginata is 210 cm to 250 cm.

It's clumsy because they're showing a sequence of moves rather than sparring. It's like when a dance teacher shows his/her students the moves during practice.

Cut to the family jewels (balls) is worse than cut to the neck. The reason is: as far as cut is concerned, cut will follow through, unlike kick to the balls that will simply crush just the balls. Cut to the balls or more correctly, cut through the balls means the balls as well as all the intestine will be cut and the victim will die. Except in cut to the ball, the victim will FEEL the cut and NOT die instantly. Cut to the neck will kill immediately w/ minimum pain.

Onaginata? Does that mean the naginata is larger/longer than usual?

Yes, you can but it's easier said than done because the naginata wielder won't give you the chance to do so It's possible but it's very hard to do so mostly you won't bother doing it

first of all this is kata not even close to sparring, so they showing only some kinds of attacks and defence. cavalry beat sword, sword beat spear, spear beat cav And naginata is something between sword and spear, onaginata is even closer to spear. So sparing of well trained swordsman and naginata-men will be in favour for sword, because sword is shorter, lighter and faster than naginata this gives big advantage in close combat. But naginata is good in middle distance to keep sword away.

My only "problem" with this demonstration is the fact that their distancing is so off. It is likely part of the formality of the demonstration but being that nearly all these techniques are aimed at stopping a rushing opponent, the lack of intensity or perhaps, intent by either the party really makes these techniques seem so artificial.
