Adventure riding is in my blood. I grew up in the 70s when my uncles would be heading out on Can-Am 175s and DT 250s for weeks at a time. I bought my first bike (1977 Yamaha DT 100 )with paper route money for 250 bucks and started worki33ng on it in the back yard immediatly. When it was rideable, it was a small gas can strapped to the back fender and a large back pack and off I went. No plan, just gas, beans and some camping gear. I was 13. My point is, anyone can do this on a budget. Desire and a little planning is all you need. All bikes are good bikes. Something lighter is better if your planning off-road, start with a dual sport and your laughing. Having owned a KLR and have gone on group adventure rides, there is no better mule on the planet if your gonna get dirty. Duct tape, rabbit wire, some gum and a beer in that tool case is all you need to fix a KLR trailside, and someone in your group may have some vise grips to help out. Your out of luck when your KTMs Injection goes haywire on you in the middle of nowhere. ( true story ). A used KLR will probibly come with lots of aftermarket already on it, the dookicky done, etc. You will have to endure a story or two from its former owner but thats ok... Get some bugs in your teeth. Make some friends. Budget bikes are everywhere. Loved this Video.

Right on, man! Seriously in this case inexpensive doesn't mean bad. When I rode with Halfthrottle a while ago we talked about motorcycle costs for a long time. One BMW GS1200 = a KLR 650 for you and three friends, plus money left over for a big trip. The nasty little farkles on this bike have all held up drop after drop, rain, snow, and mud. I'm a bit of a terrible owner and I'm hard on the bike, but it has never let me down and even saved my life when it counted.
@eveRide13 жыл бұрын
@sgffire Hey man, seriously, for the price the KLR can't be beat. It also caters to a demographic that doesn't have a lot of money, so the DIY community is always coming up with cheap mods. Thanks for the encouragement! I'll keep 'em coming!

@eveRideorg I'm also getting my degree, running 2 family businesses, dealing with clients and trying to find money and time to do the whole vlog thing - so I know how you feel. All I can say is that one vlog a month is better than none... Congrats on the baby girl btw, you're a lucky man!
@eveRide12 жыл бұрын
A KLR will ride as nice or as not-nice as you like. Some people don't like the stock seat-- I personally think it's just fine. The riding position gets to your lower back at times, but it's nice because you can stand to rest. When standing, the handlebars are a bit lower so you'll need to bend the knees. Like I said it's a tall bike so it's difficult to handle slow if you're under about 5' 10".
@eveRide13 жыл бұрын
One of these days we're going to have to have a big international ride with all the ghetto KLRs out there and a few super-nice BMWs and KTMs. My guess is that all the bikes will make it just the same. Glad to inspire!
@eveRide12 жыл бұрын
I painted with Krylon Fusion and Truck Bed liner. Both have held up well, but they aren't invincible when you crash. After three years they are both holding up very well without cracks except for places where it has been pretty scratched by bad crashes. Even then, you just get another can and spray the places that get scratched! :)

Dude I just bought a '95 and did the same paint job. I had seen a few of the camo paint jobs as inspiration but hadn't seen yours. And I mean I did THE SAME. I even did the radiator/coolant cover plates black with the khaki insert. Which I thought was unique since a lot of people paint them to match the other plastics. Only difference is I did sand instead of khaki. rustoleum truck bed on the tank to boot. AWESOME!

Speed: It certainly doesn't have the blistering acceleration of a street bike. In fact, when I test drove mine, I called it "A Tractor" because it's geared so low. But it's not really a slouch, either. Purpose-built, smaller dirt bikes have more speed off the line; bigger, purpose-built cruisers have power above 60mph. The KLR is a bike that does nothing perfectly, but everything well-enough. I'm usually in 5th going 40-80. I haven't gone faster than 85, and haven't tried. I've got kids :)
@steferfootballdude1312 жыл бұрын
Three months late, but the best bang for the buck I know of is progressive springs in the front for about 80-90 dollars, and a rear spring upgrade for about 75. I am planning on doing this in the future, so I can't comment on results yet, but I think the results will be as good as possible without doing a shock rebuild or replacement for $400+. The KLR is designed for a 155 lb rider (w/ gear) so the rear shock is kinda underpowered. Contact me if you want details.

@MetalHeadKLR650 The tank bags are okay if you scoot back on a seat a bit. I don't even notice them anymore. However, riding 2up is super uncomfortable with the bags. They're actually a bit nice for winter riding because they block the wind from your knees.

@ghotioutofh2o The funny thing about the 4 corners is that I live in Utah, yet I've never been to the 4 corners. Also, I feel cool because you're one of my youtube celebrity heroes. I'm kinda star struck that you like the bike. With the switch, I actually moved it to the top of the speedo and attached it with some 3m dual lock. The wires just weren't long enough to feel comfortable turning the bars all the way, so moving the switch close fixed several problems. Thx for the comment!

@HuevasSudadas the suspension sinks to no end lol, i have 2002 klr650 and if you are heavy on the front brakes... it just sinks... and sink....and sinks. However, i found that if you balance yourself for that sort of braking, you can come out ok and it isnt too bad. the front wheel has anti-lock braking, saved my life once in a hard brake situation.

@TheDamnSpot Yeah that's the ironic thing. One of the reasons I became a teacher was so I could have summers off to do just that-- adventure. However, my school right now is year-round, I'm getting a master's degree which requires me to be home, and I've got a baby girl coming in a week. Don't get me wrong, life is awesome. Busy, but awesome. For now, I might just post more DIY and local adventures like the KLR zen vid. I'm going to edit and post a how-to on the heated grips and guards today.
@shaokem11 жыл бұрын
you could try a thick gauge KYDEX for the hand guards. Kydex is used to make knife sheaths and handgun holsters. It's heat formed and has great memory. tough stuff, and you can get a few sheets of it in many colors for pretty cheap.

Good questions! I'll do my best to answer them. You can also find a TON of info on the forums... thumpertalk, klr650 dot net, advrider, etc. Turning sharp, like on any bike, depends on the skill level of the rider. This is a big, tall bike and when I started on it I had a hard time turning. Now, though, I can make a turn in about 2x the length of the bike.

Your bike is alive and bleeding! Great setup. You are definitely ready for around the world with that bike. I just took mine around the US to the 4 corners and places in between. Almost 14,000 with no major problems. Question: have you done the doo? Suggestion: for switches on the black plastic piece behind the head light, it works pretty well if you have the switches vertical. There's lots more space going down than forward. :-)

@eveRide9 жыл бұрын
+jessie reeves Hi Jessie, sorry to get back late! I haven't done any long world trips so I really wouldn't know which bike to recommend. I think the KLR would be a good choice, though. I took a KLR from Canada to Mexico and it was rock-solid the whole time. I think it would be a good choice for a RTW bike.
@rhllnm8 жыл бұрын
I have a KLR, 58,000 miles, no real problems. Headed to Mexico for the Baja in November 2017. I think Suzuki DR 650 would be a good choice - no doohicky, no radiator, about 50 lbs. lighter. I almost got an aircooled BMW twin long ago. I do like it's aircooled engine, drive shaft and low center of gravity. Hard to find. My latest facination is the Himalyan by Royal Enfield. Light weight is important when you are alone in the middle of nowhere.
