After visiting Sardinia in 2021, the O’pen Skiff World Championships 2022 is back to France, running from 19th to 23rd July at Carcans Maubuisson in the hot south-west. The sailing club here is located on the south side of the lake at Carcans, a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic Ocean and the famous surf spot of Lacanau. 250 skippers from 10 countries are present, the best ever entry level for this class at its World Championships.
This year sees the welcome return of the Japanese, New Zealand and Australian teams, none of who were able to travel for competitions for the last two seasons because of Covid. A return that is very much appreciated but also feared by other skippers, especially with the added presence of Russell Coutts in his role as special coach to the New Zealand team !
New for 2022, the U12s will be racing with the brand new small sail, 3.5 m2, specially designed to make sailing easier for the smaller/younger racers.
The teams are busily checking into their accommodation at this beautiful site in the middle of the pine forests that are typical of the Landes area. Then it’ll be time to deal with registration and get out for some training races before the opening ceremony that will signal the official launch of the Championships.

Après la Sardaigne en 2021, le Championnat du Monde O’pen Skiff 2022 retrouve la France du 19 au 23 juillet à Carcans Maubuisson. Ce club de Voile est situé au sud du Lac de Carcans à quelques kilomètres de l’océan atlantique et du célèbre spot de surf de Lacanau. 250 coureurs de 10 pays sont présents, ce qui représente le plus gros score jamais enregistré par la classe sur un Championnat du Monde.
Cette année, on assiste au grand retour des teams Japonais, Néo Zélandais et Australiens qui ne pouvaient plus se déplacer ces deux dernières saisons à cause du Covid. Un come back très apprécié, mais redouté par les coureurs avec la présence de Russel Coutts en coach spécial du team kiwi ! On va assister également à la première apparition de la classe U12 qui a été lancée après le Mondial 2021 à Calasetta/Sardaigne.
Les coureurs de moins de 12 ans vont régater avec la nouvelle petite voile de 3,5 m2 mise au point spécialement pour leur gabarit.
Les teams s’installent sur ce site magnifique situé au cœur de la forêt landaise. Place aux inscriptions et aux premières manches d’entrainement avant la cérémonie d’ouverture qui lance officiellement le Championnat.
