I think Ronnie hit back with that he could beat Robidoux solely by playing left-handed and offered to prove it. It was a bit of a p-take at the time (remember watching live), but Robidoux was also a bit naughty by not shaking hands. He also lost to Ronnie in the '96 German Open final, probably the highlight of his career, but was a pretty good player and they were friends by then.

@@ferencnagy1205 Not really sure how me comparing two sports played where the object of the game is to hit a small ball into a small 'opening' using additional equipment held in the hands, is a worse analogy than a comparison with a sport where the object of the game is to put a much larger ball into a much larger opening with an actual body part rather than addition equipment (other than boots) where all body parts, bar hands can be used to do so. Regarding the shots themselves, I made no judgment either way and was just pointing out the analogy used was a poor one, and to be honest I have no idea behind your logic to think golf was a worse analogy than football, considering all of the reasons I gave above.

Alain Robidoux had a legitimate chance of making some snookers when there were a good few balls left on the table - it's been done before. He just chose not to. And in that case, should have just conceded the frame earlier on when he had no chance realistically of doing so, and less getting upset about Ronnie showboating. Ronnie had every right to play any way he liked, or wanted. Alain was taking sometimes up to 1 minute to play a ball during that last frame, deliberately, to try and knock Ronnie out of his natural rhythm. But when it is 8-2 and your opponent is playing really well, there is a borderline between sportsmanship, and throwing your toys out of the pram. Alain couldn't frustrate Ronnie, and so started to throw his toys. Sore loser. And now he's retired with no Majors, and Ronnie is a highly decorated world champion.

It's funny to think that back then, playing shots left handed might have been interpreted as showboating. But knowing what we know now, Ronnie is so good left handed that he can use it to his considerable advantage playing the full range of shots close/parallel to the cushion on either side of the table.

Why do you get to decide when a player should concede?
@renerpho
@renerpho Жыл бұрын
Looking back at this, we are often forgetting that, from Robidoux's perspective, Ronnie was doing something unprecedented. O'Sullivan had, in fact, never played left handed in a match before this, and it wasn't known that he was ambidextrous. To Robidoux, it looked like Ronnie was saying "look how bad you are, I can beat you with closed eyes and my hands tied". Conceding a frame is a bit like resigning in a game of chess: You acknowledge that your opponent is good enough to beat you from the current position, and that there is no point for you to continue. Again, looking at it from Robidoux's perspective, Ronnie was playing with a handicap, and was behaving disrespectfully. Why should he acknowledge that?
@seanscanlon9067
@seanscanlon9067 Жыл бұрын
Robidoux was not suggesting playing the odd shot left-handed when the lay of the balls might have called for it was unsportsmanlike, his problem was Ronnie taking the piss when doing it constantly, as if he was saying 'I can even beat him left-handed' which Robidoux obviously saw as disrespectful. He then did not concede in order to try to get back at Ronnie.

So then, according to the commentators, it's "perfectly valid" for Robidoux to play on and try to shake O'Sullivan off his game (despite already being 8 frames behind) but it's not cool for Ronnie to respond by saying "OK, if you wanna play like that, I'm up for it"! Years later, of course, nobody bats an eyelid at Ronnie playing left handed, we just know it as one aspect of his genius, he wasn't mocking Robidoux at all (at least not when Robidoux first took it that way)
@seanscanlon9067

Leaving aside that the commentators said that it was getting childish and all a bit silly, them highlighting why Robidoux played on to try to shake O'Sullivan off his game is just them suggesting that he was allowed to do that. It does not necessarily mean that they approved of it though.

For those that don't know, Ronnie was known at the time only for his right handed play, he didn't actually play left handed. A right handed player who can't play left handed nearly as well would essentially be saying to the opponent "You are so bad that I can beat you playing with a handicap", otherwise known as taking the piss, which is why the commentators are commenting on it. That said, no one knew that Ronnie could actually play left handed and enjoys playing left handed at the time, which as why we look at this the complete opposite way today.

from wikipedia: "Robidoux reached the semi-finals of the 1997 World Snooker Championship, defeating Brian Morgan, Stefan Mazrocis and Lee Walker before losing to eventual champion Ken Doherty. He subsequently slid rapidly down the rankings.[3] Robidoux blamed his decline on the destruction of his favourite cue,[3] which he referred to as "the Eel". When Robidoux returned the cue to the man from whom he had bought it to have it mended, the man objected to Robidoux having fixed a sponsor's logo to the butt and smashed the cue to pieces. Several years later, Robidoux was asked whether the passage of time may have eased his anger towards the cue maker; he responded "I want to kill him."

In other words he beat worse average players than him before he got beat by a world class player who went on to win the championship?

@@kevinprior3549 No, it means he owed his success mostly to a queue that he arrogantly lost because he covered the name of the maker (supposedly French) with the sticker of a big American brand and then sent it to him for repair. He paid the price for too much being an asshole.

Ultimately Ronnie got it spot in reference to Robidoux moaning about Ronnie playing left handed "im better left handed than he is right" Robidoux was a boring old school type snooker player that used score 30 and run to the baulk cushion. If wasnt for the likes of Alex Higgins, hendry, white, drago and ronnie dragging snooker kicking n screaming into the 20th century, it would still be played like that....small mercies

even better than that, he retired because he was so average and blamed it on his preferred cue being broken. what kind of player can only perform with a single cue? it's not gandalf's staff for fuck sakes

Tbf. Robidoux achieved becoming a professional sportsman for a decade or so, more than 99.9% ever achieve in sport. But then I'm being a pedantic little twat and the point is Ronnie is way better and Robidoux still acted like a little tart over not much.
