The most beautiful rendition of this song, without words. Scotland’s beauty if wildflowers, rolling hills and the country as a whole is close to heaven.

Thank you! Again the video so beautiful with stunning photos, with the lovely adapted Scottish folk song, so warm the melody. A composer of our time that has the sensitivity of RVW, or Finzi. 💔❤️

Thank you for the beautiful images added to gorgeous music. I grew up in Florida which many think of as a tropical paradise but I really prefer the beautiful landscape of the British Isles. When I did my doctorate at the University of Lancaster, my advisor drove me around the hills of northern England. The heather on the hills was unforgettable.

They are real gems these traditional folk songs and especially the old hymns, especially those by Wesley and Isaac Watts.

Thank you. My singing teachers, Robert and Vera Irwin, knew both Britten and Pears and I enjoy their version too. This is wonderfully lyrical. Beauty.

Thanks for this. A beautiful setting, and John Rutter always has a sense of what a melody is about and how to bring out the best in it. The photos too, of course. I think that whatever kind of holiday you like you can get it in Derbyshire: Adventure, walking, historic, stately homes, countryside etc. etc. It's all there

This is so wonderful and soothing. Only in Britain could music like this be conceived ! I'm a bit confused about this melody though. In Ronald Stevenson's collection of Scottish Folk Music Settings, one piece is also called Waly, Waly, and that melody is totally different.

Thank you Chris. I hope you are happy and well. Regarding your confusion, I pasted a link in my Description to an extensive article about this issue on Wikipedia. It is undoubtedly of labyrinthine provenance. Best, as ever.

@@AntPDC Thanks Anthony ! Yes, we're happy and well, I hope you are too. Music like this should make anybody happy anyway ! This article makes no mention of different melodies for this song. Meanwhile I have published my recording of Stevenson's collection I mentioned, which you might like. Except perhaps for the first 4 notes, which are pretty generic by themselves, I hear absolutely no resemblance between this version of Waly, Waly and the lovely melody Rutter used. I start to wonder if Stevenson got the title right and this is perhaps some other song. Or perhaps there really are two different tunes. Intriguing....

Like most folk, I'm susceptible to music. Some tunes just wring my heart. But the waley-waley keeps turning up everywhere you go and with slight alterations as to pass as other tunes yet these are essentially the waley-waley. I have found if I'm responding emotionally to some new tune, I play it on keyboard and overlay it on the waley waley, and there it is, a new off-spring. Like the fables of old, it informs new stories.

This tune goes with the great hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," and certainly applies if the thought is "wail, wail, woe is me." May I truly understand the depth of "Christ died for me, woeful sinner" and bewail his suffering and death on my behalf.

+Frederick Imbimbo Thanks so much Frederick. For these photos I used a Nikon D7100 body with the Nikkor 18-200 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 DX zoom, and the Nikkor 135mm prime f/3.5 AI. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, so to speak, my internet speed isn't great, so I have to upload at 720p. Not a bad compromise, but combined with KZbin's video encoding, this does not do justice to the original photographs - nowhere near in fact. Best wishes, Anthony.

+AntPDC Nevertheless, the music and the images carry the beauty of creation in all its glory to world that is suffering. I could also hear the setting of "For the Beauty of the Earth" by Philip Stopford with these same photographs. I have recently purchased a Sony camera, for beginners, and will be making live video of places in New England for his piece. Thanks very much for your inspiration.

While of course there are many excellent sung versions, there are also several equally lovely instrumental versions that are, IMVHO, enhanced by being instrumental. I love this version and also the version used in the title sequence to the film The River Wild. There's room in the world for all versions.
