I was never taught how to use o-hashi. One day on a school field trip to Chinatown when I was 9, I was given a pair of chop sticks and I just knew how to use the very first time. On my first trip to Japan, everyone kept commenting on my use of o-hashi being so Japanese like. Until today, I did not know that I was actually holding them correctly. I am right handed so when I eat with non-Japanese friends while we go traveling in Japan, I use my left hand to make it more challenging.
