We had to battle some inclement weather to get the Oak frame into place, but up it went, along with a lot of drilling, dowels, routing and a hand cut roof structure..... without using any maths... works for us!

Hey man, thanks for the video, you gave me a good idea how to do the rafters, I’m not a carpenter or expert, I just do my own work for my house and was having difficult to cut the rafters. Thanks again.

Thank you for sharing. It must take a lot of time to film and edit. At least you don't have to spend ages doing your hair. It's an absolute pleasure to watch the skill and craftsmanship being applied to take a pile of timber and create something so solid, yet beautiful.

How do you start the roof assembly off, i.e get the ridge board setup and located in position?
@simonbowler1
@simonbowler1 Жыл бұрын
We faster 2 rafters to the ridge, one bold it in the air whilst the rafters aren’t fixed to the wall plate, then no round and fix reel more rafters on the other side so it stays up 👍🏻

Oh my goodness I wish that you had posted this two years ago. I could have done with a couple of these tips when building mine. Great shame you didn’t manage to film the lift as that was a very big challenge for me and really quite hairy. And needed a lot of friends! Do you get issues with damp on your green oak? Mine are sat on a metal plate and off the floor so no water but the splitting is concerning me a little and I am planning to get a steel collar fabricated just to keep the wood honest. Would you mind if I DMed you (however one does that)?

Hi Simon, how do you fix the staddle stone down? And how do you then fix the post to the staddle stone pin? I’m never sure whether they are just held through gravity or some magic glue!😂 PS your videos are brilliant!
@simonbowler1

We have a steel strap fabricated that bolts the post down to the footing beneath the patio 👍🏻

Excellent job. Thank you for sharing. May i ask the specifics of the grove on the wall plate please. I.e width and depth and is that on the inside edge? I want to put in some regular lights but these for low level ambiance sounds a good idea.

When putting the wooden dowels in the corners posts to fix the knee braces do you only drill to the tenon and not all the way through the post?
@simonbowler1
@simonbowler1 Жыл бұрын
Correct, we make sure it goes through the tenon and into the post, but not all the way through

Absolutely captivated Simon, great work! I'm just about to embark on a 3x4 English oak, single span with hip roof. This has given me a serious kick in the right direction. One question, what size are the frame timbers in this video? Thanks, Tim
