Looks great, give the concrete as much time as possible to go off! I did something similar and filled it after 2 wks and the sleepers got pushed out a few mm's.

I used to carry heavy things without a back support , now my back is damage and pain is horrible, please protect your back. Now you are young and dont feel anything , but in future you can damage your back. Back pain is horrible. Thank you for your videos.

Hi Tim, firstly, I am a MASSIVE fan! Love getting the alerts you have posted a new video! I am currently building a sleeper wall too and was wondering if you were going to show how the membrane will be finished? Are you going to be stapling it or something to the sleepers to stop the soil contacting them? I am just about to install gravel and drainage pipe to keep all water away but was thinking of maybe using a non woven fabric too on the back of the sleepers.

Hi Chris, Give a a day or two and i will have the video done! Only finished the job on Thursday so not edited yet. I went with a membrane tied in to the concrete which came up the back of the sleeper which I back filled with gravel in a 100-150mm strip and soil the other side. Will be clearer in video!

No. White oak should last for decades, especially if not in contact with soil, hence the gravel and drainage layer.

This looks really neat, but sadly you haven't dug the trench deep enough. I'd say a third of the sleeper needs to be below ground. Depending on the soil, the books say much as half

Great video Tim and helpful to me as I have a similar project to do. A silly question, but when I’ve used a concrete mixer, I’m left at the end of the day with loads of concrete slurry which I don’t know what to do with. Maybe a short video on how to clean a mixer would be useful? You fully deserve your subscriber numbers - such a diversity of video subjects and all great quality - I have still to make the rise and fall desk from an oak worktop off-cut!! Kind regards Martin

You just need to rinse out the mixer with a hose. The issue is finding somewhere to dump the mix. Unless this is the last job in the garden there should be a corner in the back of the garden to dump it. If I haven't mixed to much I put it in the used sand and cement bags and take to the tip when it's gone off.

Hi, I'm doing a similar thing but with softwood sleepers. I intend bedding on a layer of pea gravel also. They are treated but being softwood, would you recommend coating the buried end in bituminous material for extra protection?

If you coat the bottoms of the sleepers with bitumen it will prevent the moisture from escaping and could increase rotting. Best to look for UC4 treated softwood for in-ground applications.

@@gardensandplants Thanks for the reply. Yes, I left the ends free of bitumen in the end, for that reason. Although I did coat the backs and fronts below ground.

Peter Jennings the aggregates were just by that door of the store so much easier than going back and forth with trolley. We don't use b and q much as none nearby home.

European white oak, (rustic grade) Usually a circular saw from both sides, although I now have a larger saw.

@alfredodiaz Oak doesn't need to be treated as it is a hardwood and will last for many, many years even when exposed to water. 👍🙂

so I've always believed wood should not be in direct contact with concrete as the concrete stops the wood drying out and as a result it will rot...

Ideally you would keep all wood high and dry but when installed correctly and with solid oak like this I would hope it will last at least a couple of decades if not more.
