I thought we should be using vapour barrier on bare ground, then nothing at all with the insulation, except a bit of netting to hold it up?

We’ve recently started a restoration project and one of the issues we knew we’d have to tackle was the limestone foundation above ground basements that are cracking at a higher rate now because they’ve been repointed with cement mortar rather than lime mortar. How would you suggest I get the metal-hard concrete out without damaging the stone? Cheers!

Protective ear defenders for cutting but no eye protection when nailing.

We had a caravan site, we used hardboard shiny site up & grease under the tyres, little push with a tractor or pull with a winch & hey presto ! Always level the middle axle first, then front to back.

Do you know if you can build a wall with these I studs by fitting a sole plate, top plate and then fitting the studs in between??? It seems to be the method carpenters choose for internal stud walls AFAIK, which isn't that far admittedly :).
@TheRestorationCouple2 күн бұрын
Yes either works, we have done both methods. Just easier to get the top plate up fixed to studs rather than floating around while trying to fix it to steels.

Looks like you are taking on progressively bigger sections as you go along! You should arrange a factory visit to James Jones - I'm sure the production process would be really interesting! 😁 (Oh, and you would get the chance of a wee holiday to the Moray coast - BTW it's beautiful! And there are also a few distilleries...)

Just wondering if there was a detail or consideration for deflection of the steel roof truss under snow load onto the timber framing top plate and subsequently through the wall framing?
@TheRestorationCouple3 күн бұрын
Wall has been designed to take the load of the roof or at least add to the strength of the steel rafters. We have done that under all the internal steel frame as well hence why there are footings for structural stud walls between the rooms.

Genuine question Tim... What are the benefits of these joists over effectively a double skin of standard 2x4s? Seems like you could make the cavity 300 or more, webbing wouldn't be in the way of services and there would be no thermal bridging...
@TheRestorationCouple3 күн бұрын
Good question. Double stud is an option but usually framed as a Larson truss anyway I believe. Not sure I would want 5m high standard studs so easier to just frame one wall instead of two and have a super straight strong wall. No services anywhere in wall as all run inside service cavity. With 300mm of insulation apparently the 9mm osb is all but ‘neutralised’ as a thermal bridge. 👍

I hope this message finds you and the family well! I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts regarding your KZbin videos, which I’ve been enjoying and following for some time now. I appreciate the effort and passion you put into your content. Your insights and perspectives are certainly valuable! However, I’ve noticed for a while now that of your videos contain a lot of verbal content. While your explanations and commentary are informative, I believe balancing this with more visual content and actual building work would enhance the overall viewer experience.

Great video, love the idea of using I-Joists as wall studs! I've just finished renovating the vast majority of my house, but have plans for a little 6x5m extension off the side in the future - I was planning on a conventional timber framing, but after seeing those i-joists as both the joists and the walls, I'm sold; brilliant idea! A somewhat nosey question, but from one "advanced DIYer" to another - how do you financially support this? I'm having to work a full-time job (albeit from home) whilst doing all this work, and I'm barely making ends meet - this project of yours is vast to say the least, so I'm curious - is this all from sponsors/youtube revenue? A very nosey question, but out of curiosity as opposed to jealousy!
@TheRestorationCouple6 күн бұрын
We will do a video at some point on budget etc. Simple answer is no, we would earn more with ‘normal’ jobs but it gives us time towards the project which is as important I guess. All made possible from the work we put into our previous house, a fund which has all but run out now. 😬

Loving this series. We use JJI's rivals for I Joists but the principle is the same and we will need to try JJI out. Wonderful product to work with, arrives dry so is light and easy to handle. Like you allows you to pump full of insulation and keep a breathable building. It's also going to be silent inside with that amount of wood fibre. Those glulams looks finish grade 😍 could put them in a piece of furniture!
@TheRestorationCouple6 күн бұрын
So regular and straight too. 👍 No checking every joist for twists and warping. I’m actually hoping there are enough glulams left to shelve out the walk in pantry!
