You know, I really like Greg Gibson The Home Plate Umpire. I do think that Greg Gibson The Home Plate Umpire is one of the better MLB umpires. However, I will, to my dying day, believe that Greg Gibson The Home Plate Umpire got this call wrong.
@GilesWells

In the beginning of the play you can see Greg Gibson The Home Plate Umpire point to the first baseman when calling obstruction. It's not on Ortero. The first baseman blocked his path to first forcing the runner to deviate. That to me seems like clear obstruction. It's a weird play but I think Greg Gibson The Home Plate Umpire did in fact get this one right. (btw RedSox fan so no bias here)
@almostfm
@almostfm 7 жыл бұрын
The problem I have with that is two-fold: a) the runner deviated into Otero. The play was right in front of him, and he changed his line directly into the Otero, and b) that deviation didn't have to occur. Had he run into the first baseman or avoided both players, then I don't have a problem with the call. But calling obstruction on what _might_ have happened is the problem. Look at the video again frame by frame (if you pause, you can use the "," and "." keys to go frame by frame). Aybar cuts to his left, and then moves back to the right to cause the collision.. The first baseman isn't in the original path Aybar was taking until after the collision with Otero.

I agree that was the call made, on the 1B, but I still don't think it was valid. Like the pitcher, 1B was inside the line even after the runner hit the pitcher. I would think that obstruction there would be similar to a running out of the base line call on a runner getting hit with a thrown ball while running to first. My only reservation is that that call can only be made on a runner running to first and I am not sure whether obstruction would make use of the same lines on the field. Given the judgement call nature of this...call, I would think it would be okay to just go with that reasoning here.

I think he saw the ball was moving left to right and like anyone would do in a vehicle, you turn in the direction the ball came from to avoid contact. The first baseman being to the right of the P, prevents the P from continuing his movement toward the right and resulted in the runner making contact. I think this is a simple case of a runner being tagged out and not obstruction. I also don't think the runner intentionally hit the pitcher.

Obstruction on the first baseman before the collision. A fielder cannot block the basepath before thru have the ball. Umps made the correct call.

For clarity: The "running lane" is the area on and between the chalk lines from 45' away, up to 1st base. The batter-runner is only restricted to the running lane when a ball is being *thrown* to 1st base from an area where the batter-runner's position interferes with the catch by the fielder at 1st base. [5.09 (a)(11)] It is irrelevant in all other situations. A runner's "base path" is a direct line between where the runner is when a tag is first being attempted and the base the runner is trying to reach. [5.09 (b)(1)] Until a tag is attempted, a base path does not exist. Now for applying the rules: All talk of the batter-runner being "out of his base path", or "out of the running lane" is irrelevant, because this play involves defensive players attempting to field a *batted ball* , and his change of course is prior to either of them fielding the ball, much less trying to tag him. When two (or more) fielders are converging on the same batted ball, *only one of them* is "protected". [6.01 (a)(10)] The other is not allowed to impede the batter-runner. In this situation, the pitcher was the "protected" fielder. The "unprotected" 1st baseman obstructed the batter-runner (prior to the ball being fielded) by forcing him to alter his course to 1st base. It does not matter whether the batter-runner veered to the left or to the right. With obstruction having occurred, the runner is now protected from any tag-out up to 1st base. After the collisions, the Plate Umpire correctly killed the play, and awarded the batter-runner 1st base. [7.06 (a)]

One and three run to grab a fair play ball, both of whom block off the lane, 1 grabs ball, and 3 bumps into 1 because they have no idea what the fuck is happening, one tags runner "out by a mile" for running out a play. Batter was running out a play, pitcher and first baseman were clearly blocking the route to first base. Pitcher had the ball, but that's negated by the interference by the first baseman running into him, blocking the base path. He's safe at first.

Except that when the catch was made, _both_ fielders were still on the grass. R1 is looking right at F1, and he cuts left and runs right into him. And when the ball is fielded, R1 is still two strides away from the collision. I think he thought that F3 was going to field the ball, and so he'd run into F1 and get an obstruction call.

The pitcher was. The announcers weren't looking at the rule that the umpires invoked. They called obstruction on either the pitcher or the first baseman. Since both were trying to field the ball, per the obstruction rule, the batter-runner should not have been granted first base.

***** you are wrong go back and watch it again because the 1st baseman never got close to the line until him and the pitcher hit while attempting to field the ball. The runner changed his path into the field and ran into the pitcher who caught the ball and actually tagged himself by doing so. The runner should have been called out not only for changing his direction into the path of the fielders but for not avoiding violent contact not to mention he ran into the pitchers glove with the ball in it. The runner could easily have went to the right of the fielders without any collision or chance of contact and like someone else stated I believe he made his move intentionally and he got one over on the umpires.

Mad Painter The runner changed direction because he was trying to avoid the contact. Whether the first baseman was in fair or foul territory it doesn't matter. The call is correct, the first basemen was directly in the basepath, and the runner was unable to get through. Yes he ran into the tag, but the first baseman forced him out of the basepath and into the pitcher. Good call by Greg Gibson the Home Plate Umpire.
@DiMo28
@DiMo28 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. You get obstruction when in the basepath, not when out of the basepath. If he had run into the first baseman who did not have the ball, then it would be obstruction. However, he ran into the player that actually had the ball so that obviously is not obstruction on that player. In order to get an obstruction call, you have to make contact with an obstructing player and make an attempt to get to the next base. That's basic umpiring. They muffed this call.
@theburnetts
@theburnetts 5 жыл бұрын
@@DiMo28 Actually you don't need contact at all to get an obstruction call. For example let's say that a batter hits a ball in the gap to the outfield wall. As he is rounding first the first baseman is in his way standing near the bag. So the runner has to slow down to avoid contact and go around him. Then the runner gets thrown out at second base. The umpire can make a judgement call here of obstruction on the first baseman for being in the way of the runner and causing him to have to run around - even though there was no contact - and he can award the batter second base. In this play that is what Gibson ruled (I am guessing). He ruled that the first baseman (without the ball) was in the way of the runner and caused the runner to have to deviate and ultimately run in to the pitcher. It's tough for the first baseman but it is the correct call. The pitcher can't get called for obstruction because he has the ball (and is protected). But the first baseman can get called for obstruction because he doesn't have the ball (and is not protected).

@@73seabee I wouldn't say his running lane was clear the entire play. As he was about a third of the way down the line it was clear that both players were probably going to be in his way. They were both moving in his direction. If you stop it at around 8 seconds just as he is running in to the pitcher you will clearly see that the first baseman was completely in his running lane.

xokocodo I see what you are saying. But in such a case, why leave the base path to try to avoid the fielder in front of him? Just run into him and then tagged or not, he gets the base. Since the fielder in front of him was not in possession of the ball, it would be interference which will result in the runner being awarded the base. But the runner dodged to the left running into Ortero who was in possession of the ball.
@hfontanez98
@hfontanez98 8 жыл бұрын
+Simone G It is not that simple. The 1B and the P are both coming on to the runner's path. In fact, the P bumps into the 1B pushing him more in the way of the runner. Obviously, I don't know what Aybar was thinking, but my guess is that he was trying to run around the 1B's back; thinking he's the one with the ball and to make it a harder tag. In the process, he ends up colliding with the P who happened to have the ball. I don't have a problem with the call. You can't build a wall of players around the path of the runner and expect the runner to maneuver his way around it. That said, I have a bit of a problem him running on the infield grass. I think (technically) he should've been called out. And, if it was just Aybar and the pitcher, he would've been called out. The fact that there were two players obstructing his path, in my opinion, was the reason why the ump called for obstruction.

The runner (or batter-runner in this case) must avoid a fielder making a play on a batted ball. Aybar veered inside the baseline to attempt to avoid the 1st baseman (I would assume), and then because the 1st baseman didn't field the ball, he is now illegally occupying the baseline, so obstruction is called on the 1st baseman. Very difficult call, but I think they got it right. More times than not, the umpires get it right at this level. They been trained for the most unlikely of scenarios.

The obstruction would be on the first baseman for blocking the base path. The pitcher made the play, giving him the right of way over the runner. @ianthomas1560 6 жыл бұрын
acaseofagetori the call is right. If you actually look at where the fielders are going instead of just pausing at 7 seconds, you'll see that they're both heading towards the white line. The runner is not looking up, so he doesn't know how close the ball is or how long before it hits the ground/gets caught. All he sees is two people running towards his right. In his mind, if he sees two people running to his right, where's he going to go? Yup, his left. So many people keep on saying "he ran out of the baseline" without actually knowing what the baseline is. The baseline is a straight line drawn from the runner to the base he is trying to get to WHEN A TAG IS ATTEMPTED ON HIM. That's why the "skunk in the outfield" play works. Yes the rules are special for first base, but if you read the rules they put on screen, you'll see that the runner can run out of the three foot line to avoid the fielder fielding the ball. He is only restricted to the three foot path if the ball is being thrown to first base, which it is not. The batter could have gone wherever he wanted to as long as it was in the general direction of first base in this case, and he made the right choice. The only problem was that the ball was lower than he thought and it got caught, which caused the fielders to stop moving and the runner to collide with them. The runner is awarded first base. End of story.

If there is only one defensive player here making the play, the runner is pretty clearly going to be out. BECAUSE and ONLY BECAUSE the first baseman, who did not have the ball, blocked the runners established baseline (in this case it was effectively the actual white baseline) - this is properly called obstruction and the runner properly awarded first. The right of way is basically 1) Any defender with the ball can be anywhere and has priority over 2) a runner on his established baseline who has priority over 3) A defender WITHOUT the ball. Good call.

Weather he was trying to hit the fielder with out the ball I dont know but was a smart move. I normally dont care for cheep plays but 2 fielders shoulder to shoulder blocking the baseline is cheep aswell

+WOLFGABE respectfully thats not correct. He entered the basepath at the same time the pitcher fielded the ball. At the very moment the pitcher fields the ball the first baseman Moss is in the basepath and by rule is not making a play on the ball and is in the basepath without the ball causing Aybar to have to change direction in order to avoid a collision. That by definition is obstruction.

This is a hilariously bad call. Aybar runs into the pitcher WHO HAS THE BALL and runs right into his glove. What Aybar was hoping was for the first baseman to field the ball, then run into the pitcher and it's obstruction. Because the pitcher caught it, Aybar's out as soon as he's tagged so the obstruction can't possibly count because he's out.

Before the collision between Otero (pitcher) and runner (aybar), at around 0:07 Aybar is seen stepping directly out of the baseline even before first baseman (Brandon moss) collided with Pitcher (otero), at the time of the collision between Moss and Otero, it is clearly seen that aybar has a clear and direct path to first base if he stays in the baseline, but Aybar steps out of the baseline and onto the grass before the collision of moss and otero Now any idiot that plays baseball knows that if you run out of the baseline you are out It is no denying that moss was in the baseline but that was after aybar had stepped out of the baseline and before aybar collided with otero, so aybar should be called out regardless, even if otero did tag him, at that point it shouldn't even mattered If aybar had ran straight and stayed in the baseline he would've rightfully been awarded first base, at the time of aybar stepping out, he had a clear path to first base,the correct call should be out,

BeatleKid96 I wonder if i might be able to help clear this call up. It's confusing a tough to tell because A. Gibson doesn't quite make it clear and B. Obstruction really isnt a call that gets made a ton. But the obstruction is actually called here on the 1st baseman not the umpire. And what Gibson is calling is that while not in possession of the ball the 1st baseman, NOT THE PITCHER, by standing in the baseline caused Aybar to run out of the baseline. The collision that takes place between the pitcher and Aybar isn't actually relevant. Its what your attention is drawn to obviously because its there right in front of you. But pitcher actually has possession of the ball, not the 1st baseman, and because the 1st baseman doesn't have the ball he can't be where he was. Contact between the 1st baseman and Aybar is not necessary for an obstruction call. I'm a former minor league umpire. I did some Single A ball and Independent Pro ball. Hope that helps.

Alan Hess ***** Obviously you do not know the definition of Obstruction.... Rule 2.00 OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner. First of all the pitcher had the ball so he could not have been obstructing. 2nd of the all, the 1st baseman was in the act of trying to field a ball. This is no different than when a shortstop comes up to field a ball and gets in the way of a runner going from 2nd to 3rd. The responsibility is on the runner to get out of the way of the ball and the fielder. What if this had been a popup on the first base line...would the field have had to get out of the runners way until he had passed before he camped himself on the first base line to catch the ball??? Of course not!

Both fielders were moving from the inside toward the outside. I believe that the runner juked inside under the impression that the fielders' motion would continue toward the outside. He was attempting to dodge them by running to the left as they were moving to the right. Unfortunately, they suddenly stopped and remained in that spot. Yes, the pitcher had the ball, but I wouldn't call it a tag because, even though he wasn't in the baseline, the other guy was. The runner was forced to go out of the baseline by the obstruction of the 1st baseman, he dodged inside, because the fielders were in motion toward the outside.

I think the right call was made. Had the pitcher not run into the first baseman, it could've been different. Aybar ran in because the fielders were moving out. Even though the pitcher tagged him after the ball was caught, he hit the first baseman causing him to stop in his tracks. He had nowhere to go. It was poor communication by the fielders also.

Good call; notice how first baseman Moss forces Aybar to run out of the base line thus colliding with the pitcher. If the first baseman wasn't there and he just ran into the pitcher (whom of which had the ball), he would of been obviously out. However, even though the pitcher does have the ball, the first baseman FORCED Aybar to change his direction to the base. And the obstruction ruling states that if a fielder who does not have possession of the ball (in this case it was first baseman Moss) causes a runner to move or collide, it is obstruction. This is a clear obstruction call. In simple: Aybar collided with the pitcher because Moss forced him to, thus being an obstruction ruling.

For what it's worth, I think obstruction is the wrong call if it's being called on the pitcher because Otero is the one with the ball. By definition, obstruction is a defensive violation by a fielder who doesn't have the ball. Given where Aybar is, you can't call the first baseman for obstruction, either, because that's not the one with whom Aybar made contact. And "out of the baseline" isn't a valid argument, either, because Aybar has the right to make his own path to first base.

say the ball is not bounced into the path of the runner. a fielder catches the ball and runs in the way of the runner, tagging him out in the process. Is the runner out? If so, the obstruction call is unnecessary. If not, does intent factor in somehow? if it does, the angels runner is out, and safe otherwise. However, in this case, the runner deviated from his pathway into the fielder with the ball; He is out. In all situations, he is out. Seems pretty clear cut to me.

I don't think this should have been interference for two reasons. 1. Otero had the ball and was the one to run into the baserunner. Therefore, it can be argued that he was making a play on the baserunner. If the one without the ball had run into him, it would be obstruction. 2. Aybar left the basepath because he thought the first baseman was in the way. He wasn't technically avoiding him, he was prematurely avoiding where he thought the first baseman would be. If he had continued forward and then run into the first baseman or avoided him later, it should have been obstruction as well. Seeing as he was early AND tagged by the player with the ball, I think it should not have been obstruction.

Both the pitcher and 1b have a right to attempt a play. It the pitcher hadn't made the play, the 1st baseman was exactly where he would have needed to be to make the play. It's not obstruction if they're making an honest attempt at a play, and clearly neither of them knew where the other was. Just because 1b didn't make the play doesn't automatically mean he was obstructing. If a bunt gets laid down half way to first, the first baseman is allowed to run down the first base line to make the play. This is no different and the tag was still made. I have no idea why this is so hard for people to understand. Runner has every right to leave the base path but he is also clearly tagged out.

Either the pitcher and 1b will be protected when fielding the ball, not both. Once the runner altered his path to avoid the fielder without the ball, we have obstruction. Good call.

I didn’t see the pitcher get the ball at first so I thought it was interference but now that I see he had the ball there is no interference. Out!!!!!

It's an out out he ran into the guy with the ball and He ran out of the base path. If he stays in the base path yes it's obstruction he's safe but he ran into the guy with the ball

He was out and cheated by running outside of the line and trying to knock the ball loose he should have been ejected for that!

if youre that home plate umpire, how do u see he didnt charge the pitcher on purpose in an attempt to get obstruction called?

The first baseman is allowed to "obstruct" the basepath if he is attempting to field the ball and at that point its the runners job to avoid the collision, not the first baseman. Not to mention the first baseman wasn't even obstructing the base path until the collision happened as well as the fact that the runner collided with the pitcher who had the ball. It should have been a tag out. The runner obviously tried for a collision. You can even see him looking back to ask for a call. The umpires got it wrong this time.

Only one player can obstruct the base path while fielding. The guy who gets the ball. The other guy gets called for obstruction. QED

only one fielder is protected from obstruction during a play for fielding a batted ball. The umpire determines which fielder is protected in his judgement. Very Simple call considering the 1b was camped for the play on the ball

dude looked like he thought the pitcher was going to cross the baseline so he was gonna Juke left, not intentionally done, he had eye contact with the pitcher he didn't think the first basemen would follow up the catch and would play first for the quick toss out.

It’s not obstruction because he ran towards the defender with the ball it would be if he ran into the other defender, anyways this whole crisis could’ve been averted if the home plate umpire motioned to both players and had the dodgers celebrating in their dugout
