Much thanks to you and other like minded people for the information. We are also looking forward to getting a few dairy goats for our 4 acre weedy homestead. Once we get established I will have to build an elevated goat house with fenced run and I’m thinking of a semi intensive approach as we get over 100” rain per year Thinking of keeping heard at no more than 9 or 10 and also harvesting meat for family members

I've raised mini nubians for a few years and they are the best! Perfect size, friendly, amazing milk and lots of it, quiet, and so pretty! We've also butchered one and the meat is amazing. Like a high quality lean beef. Make sure you render the tallow, it is amazing for your skin.

We have a mixed herd of ND and nubian/kiko. our reasons are exactly the same. What we’ve found after 4 years is that keeping our own bucks is much easier than either sending the girls out or bringing in someone else’s. Our goal is to keep 2 does milking with a 3rd on the bench - even with just 2 producing we are covered up in milk and are trying to find creative ways to use it. Yay goats!

This is a wonderful video. I raise La Mancha’s. I agree with everything you said as to why goats make so much sense. I love them. I have raised them since the early 80’s. Since I am so much older than the people that make these videos, I rely on your knowledge. I remember to feed, milk, hooves, clipping the udder ect. But I do forgot the things that are only done once a year or so. So many young people who are raising goats have so many great ideas. I do know my goats keep me going. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

A video about why you went with the mini Nubianans would be great for us research nerds. I get a kick out of researching and selecting what I think will work best for my goals.

Had a large dairy goat operation 120-160 milkers in southwest Wisconsin back around 2005-2007. Had to shut it down after three years. But they were awesome and loved the milk. Sold milk to monthchevre cheese co at the time and had largest production herd in the area. Goats are smart, easy to manage and great reproducers. I had alpine, sannen, Nubian, and lamancha. Sannen and Nubian top two favs with Alpine great also. Had to sell out herd due to personal reasons and unable to find help at the time. No longer live in Wisconsin, moved to Texas end of 2007. I tested my goats for protein, fat, and production also to help accurately cull herd and improve genetics not to mention be able to prove their worth when I sold off offspring to other farmers. Sannens highest average production, Nubians highest average butter fat for my herd. High quality hay that I raised myself and supplemented with grain mix that I raised myself also. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work also but the animals were great and missed it when I had to sell. So enjoy the 2-3 milkers keep them happy and they will do the same for your family as you’ve already found out.

We have Nigerian Dwarves and love them! We just had babies two weeks ago and I'm milking them, though we don't get much. I would love a video about the Mini Nubians and maybe even a hint as to how you make yogurt. Loved this video so much!! Goats can be a pain, but they're a fun and cute pain and in our family, we have them for the same reason: so much less maintenance than cattle!! Plus, a lot less space is required and a LOT cheaper to feed!!

I heard of my neighbors in the area using pokeweed to get rid of parasites and small doses to keep them away. Also DE is good too.

I would love to know more about mini Nubian goats, why you chose them, and where you got yours from! Beginning to research mini dairy goats and was so excited for your video. I've loved your chicken videos and have followed and learned so much in the year I've had chickens. Bring on the goats! 😊

I’m considering goats for our mini homestead. How much bigger are the mini Nubians than the Nigerian dwarf, & why did you choose the mini Nubian over the ND? Thanks for the video!

0:52 hand milking vs a machine. ND does have a higher fat % but a Nubian is still pretty high but they're also smaller than say a Saanen or Alpine which having more than one for redundancy as well as spacing freishans out it would be easier to stay in a production level you're comfortable with, without winding up drowning in milk. And even if you do wind up getting a little extra or it's been sitting awhile it can go to the dogs, cats, or better yet pigs. Only real problem I've ever heard of from ND is they're a bother to milk by hand and cleaning and sterilizing a machine daily on this scale is a negative sum gain.

As a child who was/is allergic to dairy my parents bought a goat, all I drank was goats milk as a child. Now that I’m in my 50’s my wish is to get a few goats, unfortunately my property is not fenced and we are currently dealing with mountain lions in the area. Our neighbor has lost 2 goats and 2 sheep due to the lions helping themselves to a tasty meal…. I just want to say I love that you are doing this!

This has helped me in deciding on whether to get a full size dairy or a mini being told that they are harder to milk, (smaller milkers to latch) I didn’t see that with you milking at all. We are in our third year of growing our homestead so this has really helped. Thank you yea a video on the mini Nubians would be great.

I love goats...I had 14 at one point of various species but all of them were like my dogs and followed me hiking through old growth forests with my two dachshunds. I'll always miss having them around. If I win the lottery I'll have them again.

I grew up with goats. My dad even rigged them up to pull a wagon. My nephew has a dairy goat farm and takes blue ribbon at the state fair every year. They make yogurt, ice cream and cheese

I love goats!! After all my babies go to their new homes (2 of my does had 4 kids each this yr.), I'll have a herd of 5 ND. So many things can affect weight. I'd start giving a ration of 16% protein grain and alfalfa pellets each day and go from there. Be sure to check how much to give based on weight of goat.

Mini Nubians are the best! Regarding the thin doe, they can get thin this time of year while at their peak production. Especially the first fresheners and top milkers. Also parasite loads fluctuate so keep on top of them, but your browse, rotational grazing is a great plan. If your not already keep an eye on their FAMACHA 😁 We’ve had a young doe on the thin side too so I’ve been getting her on the stand mid day for some extra alfalfa pellets and Chaffhaye. This seems to be working.

I used oil and oat-mo to fatten up an older gelding (Tennessee Walker). Not sure if a goat can stomach these, but the oil and mo put it on visibly for my old adopted friend.

Hello, I saw in an older video of yours that you lived in Wisconsin, do you still? I live in southern Wisconsin and was wondering if you still did, what part of the state or where you got your dairy goats as we are currently looking to get a few for our growing homestead! 😊
