We have a 2 year old 8x10 ruggable, 4 kids and a dog. The rug was permanently curled extremely badly, the corners for example rolled into a tube along with 2 of the edges! I basically gave up on it and we just lived with the curling. I steamed it over a week ago and it is 95% fixed! I think we are going to buy another ruggable rug now that we have a solution. THANK YOU

It shouldn’t be difficult for them to just change the backing or something…something. If they haven’t responded to this issue yet then it looks like my money will be better spent elsewhere as well. Might as well just get an indoor/outdoor rug that I can just drag outside and scrub and hose down.

I also had the curling problem. I followed your advise and used steam from my Rowenta steam iron and put Silpat silicone cookie sheet liner between the rug and my wood floor as I went along the edges to protect it. So far so good! My curled edges are flat again!

Our ruggable curl was so bad that I was at my wit’s end. I figured I had nothing to lose so I washed it and cut all the binding off then bound the edges on my $99 brother sewing machine with tight zig zag stitch. I think I went over every edge 2 times on the sewing machine. It’s working so far! I had to also cut the black base to make it smaller, of course.

I have five Ruggables, both old and new corner styles, and haven’t had any problems with curling. Based on my experience putting my first one together, I think one of the reasons the rugs curl is because people pull on the top too tightly in an effort to get rid of wrinkles and small humps along the edges. I figured out the problem was the underpad, not the top. The pad is delivered rolled up very tightly so usually has ripples and humps in it that don’t relax out. I flattened it by laying a thin damp towel on the wrinkled/humped parts and pressed over the towel with a steam iron (on the lowest steam setting). Once the underpad was flat, I put on the top being careful not to pull on it too hard and create a lot of tension. If it showed any tendency to curl along an edge as I assembled it, I rolled it back and rerolled that part, relaxing the tension. I’ve had my two 8x10 rugs for six months and so far, so good, no curling. I have only spot cleaned, not washed, the two big ones so can’t say if they’d shrink or curl. I have washed my 7’ runner and put it in the dryer. It didn’t curl but did shrink infinitesimally though it still covered the underpad okay. What did happen was that the binding came loose on the point of every corner. I just hot glued it back into place. LOL I do agree the company’s customer service is great. I ordered a mat that came with a very small colour defect in one spot. I emailed them a picture of it and they sent me a new top, no charge. :) These are not high end rugs, in fact, they’re more like floor mats than rugs but if you have pets, kids, or sensitivities to chemicals found in regular rugs, they’re worth the price. If they last a couple of years, I’ll be happy and replacement will be cheaper since I’ll only have to buy a new top.

UPDATE 8/20 - Floor steamer solution still working like a charm! I see some questions about the effect of steam on our hardwood floors. We actually made a whole video about how the floor has held up after years of steam. Lots of comments from others who do the same thing, on that video. Here's the link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqeQcoGKr7BprJY and here's the link to the exact steam mop kit we use: kit.co/oakabode/steam-mop-supplies Timestamps in description. Also, just want to reiterate -- these videos are still unsponsored. As mentioned, Ruggable was very generous to send us some free products after seeing our critiques, with some changes implemented into the product to try to fix the curling. I do turn companies down for sponsored video requests daily, so having a company send us an improved product while explicitly saying we don't have to post anything about it is always a breath of fresh air. A few of the more minor critiques still do apply, so if you haven't seen our previous reviews with those details, those links are in the description for you.

What happens to the wood floor underneath?
@beetlejes
@beetlejes 3 жыл бұрын
Eventually, this will cause the wood floors to warp. You shouldn't use steam mops on wood floors. Even if you were to put something underneath the edges, before using the steamer, this, in my opinion, is still a very inconvenient "solution". It'd consist of every two weeks, having to lift the edges, place some sort of pad/protective layer, underneath the edges, then painstakingly running a steam mop over the rug edges, multiple times, all while trying your best not to wet, or heat the pad/protective layer too much.
@mrksdlx

Sealing the wood floor might prevent warping but yeah....now you have a full blown job site to deal with when all you wanted is adding a functional rug 😆

I had oak #2 floors in our last house. Solid hard wood. Not engineered or that particle board stuff. They were brand new, steam mopped for three years. When we sold the house they looked great except (dog claws, kids, and) under the refrigerator. New refrigerators release their heat underneath instead of the back and up over the top now. It really dried them out and they were shrinking and separating.
@SecondHandJan

@@beetlejes OMG... I thought the same thing! This can damage the wood! I would slide a wood platform or portable ironing board UNDER the ruggable instead then use the steam.

What you need to do is go to a fabric store like Joann Fabrics and get some fusible (iron on) interfacing. Get the heavy duty kind or get fusible buckram, the stuff used in hat and bag making to stiffen fabrics. Cut the interfacing into two and a half inch wide strips and iron it to the back of the rug’s edge just inside and right up against the threaded edge binding. This will stiffen the edge and keep it flat. Doesn’t add any measurable thickness either so won’t show through. No more curling. Works even after washing. If you need it even stiffer just iron on two layers. Cheers!

We have *multiple* Ruggables* which happens to be of tall the sizes they sell minus the longest runner. Our Ruggables include several of each size of the small, mediums, runners as well as large. Each time we have "found" a solution another purchase was made, as spot cleaning a rug when/ if needed was nice to have. However, with that said *every* one has curled, to include those that are in rooms that do not have foot traffic (aka barely used) or have been washed. We are finding Ruggables curling and have become a hazard causing tripping due to the ends and sides curling. Solutions have included professional cleaning by our regular carpet coming due to the sizes of rugs that can not fit in a washer (our dinning has one with a long concrete table and can't be moved) several of there attempts and thoughts in installation and cleaning has not solved the problem. Among the items has been a "professional" carpet tape large one in the dinning room which is a room with out foot traffic.. Corner pieces have been tried. on all. It truly is an unfortunate flaw in the Ruggables design otherwise it would be a great product. We personally will be replacing all of the Ruggables (23) going back to original area rugs.

It's a good tip for those who have the ruggable rugs. I've been trying to decide and your video has helped me... Thank You! I'd love to support this company but ultimately for the price and having to fiddle with the rug every two weeks, I don't think it's worth all the money. I have been fascinated with ruggable, but now that I've seen this, I will probably not pursue it because, we have laminated floors that we can't use the steam solution on. People should be aware of the different between real wood. We love the laminate and it's easy care, but we have been cautioned about no standing water. Sigh. Yours are beautiful, by the way. The curling would be disastrous because we have to be careful about tripping issues.

The steam mop doesn’t leave standing water. 💕 it dries so fast because it’s steam and your aren’t in one place long enough for it to get between edges or anything. My floors are dry about three minutes or so after I’ve mopped. We have LVP flooring and our mop has been amazing for it. I don’t know if yours would be different or not. Just wanted to let you know that standing water is not a byproduct of the steam mop. 😊

I’ve been very happy with my far less expensive wool rug from Lowe’s……until my dog developed a bladder infection and started peeing on the rug😩. I called someone to come in to clean them and they wanted to charge me more than it would cost to just buy new ones! As our dogs are old now and problems will crop up, I told my husband I was thinking about ruggables again and he was NOT happy. But now that I know there’s an option to get them looking nice again, I just might do it! My current wool rug is just too thick to really get clean with a home steam carpet cleaner, trust me I’ve tried!

Hi, first I like to thank you for the time you take to scrutinize this product. It helps a lot of people, including myself, to make the decision whether to buy this product or not. But...and here is the famous "BUT"... you can not claim yourself "not sponsored by the company" anymore because you accepted their free products! Saying this though I would have done that as well! Being able to compare the new version with the old one is great and by accepting the "freebie", it allowed you to compare without having to spend anything. I am referring to your video with the red rug and the color fading etc.! The other issue is, of course they are nice to you! After all, you are reviewing their product in public and not being nice to you would be extremely counter productive. LOL I appreciate your review videos a lot because it helped me decide that this type of rug may be great for us in the future but certainly not in our current situation household due to the rug curling and tripping issue. Thank you! Your videos...mission accomplished!

Took 2 people about 15 minutes to put down the 9x12. Rolling pin trick below was a good one. Crunching plastic sound went away as soon we walked on it and the pad stuck securely to the rug. It is beautiful and it was easy. Don’t know why the comments suggest otherwise, but it was no harder than any other rug.

Thank you!!! I just tried it and it worked perfectly. Curious to see how long it lasts. We have a dog and I have to agree that seems to be the culprit of the curling. All our other Ruggables that don't curl are in places he does not actively play. This makes me so happy. I will say though if I did not already own a steam mop, I may give up on Ruggables but thanks to you I do not need to now.

I was so excited to find this video because I’m about to just get rid of my 8x10 ruggable purchased in feb 2018. For its first year or so it was actually in a really low traffic area but has been abused a lot since. Washed probably less than 5 times because I hate smoothing it out. Unfortunately this trick worked for me for about 10min and I was generous with the mop as suggested (despite cringing over my parquet). In our case I think the edges of the underlayment no longer have the sticky hook & loop feel because I have to vacuum it to death to get all the dog hair and kid crumbs off that stick to it. I just reached out to ruggable so I guess I’ll see what they say. I’m sad because with 3 kids and a big sheddy dog I want these to be my answer, but it seems it just isn’t.

I have the new Rooba and it is pretty powerful. That said, steaming the rug edges is not a good idea for us. We have wood floors and the steamer would ruin the floors. Have they fixed the issue yet without having to steam it? My roomba runs every day so I am sure that my chances of a curling rug would be higher than most. Thanks for you video. It helped a lot! You actually saved my floors!

I'd be really nervous to try this since i have laminate floors and used my steam mop on them once and it was to much steam ( on highest setting which is what would soak the rug) and caused a piece to warp. Ive only had my rug for a month so we will see if mine even curles.

WOW I was JUST looking at Ruggable (they are having a sale) and I literally stumbled on your site - where I watched all 4 of the Ruggable reviews. THANK YOU!!! I think I am going to take the plunge and get one. Just wondering if you have any insight on this question: I have a big Aeron chair in my craft space. The chair has big roller feet. I roll my chair around the room like crazy...it is so easy to roll because I am on hardwood ...no rugs there now. Is the Ruggable thin enough that I could roll my chair on top of it pretty easily? So many thanks. I'm subscribing!!

You could also sew small snaps to the cover and pad, right up in each corner. Snaps are still washable if they’re rated for clothing. If the edge of the snap is right against the edges of the corners, they wouldn’t curl.

We recently refinished our hardwood floors and I have been trying to decide on purchasing a ruggable. I have to say, watching you steam over the floors like that made me, well...😱!! Haha!! On our wood floors, I would be concerned about doing that over the same spot with any kind of regulatory. I am curious though, after three months, are the new rugs with the new corners curling? Did it solve that problem? Thanks for the video!!

We have two rugs. The runner has the standard mat under it. It curls. The large area rug with the extra thick cushioned mat doesn't curl. I think it is because the rug is large enough to hang over the edge of the mat 1/2" or more. It sort of drops below the level of the mat. I love my ruggable rugs!

Thank you for commenting on the thickness of the pads. I’m about to order a 6’ x 9’ rug to go under the dining table, and a 4’x6’ one to go in front of the couch, with an armchair facing in at each end - and couldn’t decide whether to have the thick or the thin pad. I’m 78 and very healthy, but didn’t want to risk having a trip hazard. I now think I’ll go with the thicker pad. I’ve decided on the Morris Strawberry thief design in Sage and Rose colours - which should go perfectly with my light sage green couch & armchairs, and the bamboo floors- can’t wait! Thanks again!

I just ordered my first Ruggable and will be here next week. I am just a little concerned about my dogs toenails. They are labs and they play rough. Our old rug had pulls in the fabric everywhere. They don't have accidents anymore but the rugs can get dog smelly after a while so the washing for that reason interested me.
