I was a Sophomore in high school during this season and I remember that just before the All-Star break we got hot, and kept rolling throughout the season, a Yankee sweep at home included, we snatched the division from the Rangers on G162 and were a few plays away from making a run at a World Series. I’ll never forget the magic during that season, from the walkoffs, to the sweeps, to the roaring Coliseum. Green and Gold till I’m Dead and Cold.

This was such a memorable season, and this was the most memorable game. The A's were below .500 and 13 games behind first place on June 30th. They took off after that. A month left in the season, the A's were on a roll. I looked at the schedule, last series of the season is against the Texas Rangers. The Rangers, class of the division, first place and just coming off of two WS appearances. I thought to myself: "that could be and epic series". The A's continue to climb in the standings. With 9 days left in the season, the A's are 5 games back. When the Rangers finally arrived for the final series, the A's had climbed to 2 games back of the Rangers. I went to the first game, A's win: playoff spot clinched and one game back of the Rangers. I went to the second game, brought a ton of people, tailgated. The stadium was rocking, you can tell the momentum is in the A's favor. A's win again, tied for the division lead. Winner takes all for the final game of the season. I went to game 3. Hamilton literally drops the ball in center field which was a major blunder, allowing the A's to rally. Balfour comes out to shut down the Rangers season. Wow. Incredible. A's face the Tigers in the division series. Lose the first two in Detroit. Come home. Brett Anderson pitches a gem and coco makes an amazing play in CF robbing a HR. A's win. I went to game 4. We know our backs are against the wall. But the stadium was loud anyway. For most of the game the A's couldn't put anything together. It wasn't until the 9th inning came. Buzzed, I turn to my friend and say sarcastically "we got this". Then this above rally happened. Just. Wow. What a season. Best week of baseball I ever experienced in person.

I have been living away from the Bay Area since 1994, so I was not able to see any of these games live, which makes me sad when I think about it. Lifelong A's fan since I was a kid in the 80's. Lots of great memories at the Coliseum. It's a damn shame they're moving to Vegas. The ownership of the A's is squarely to blame here. They've blamed the city and the fans for the organization's decline over the last several years but it's been a steady degradation of this organization by cheap, billionaire owners that has resulted in where they're at now. But this A's organization isn't what I remember, so Vegas can have em. With great ownership they would have already had their downtown ballpark (privately funded) and still be successful in Oakland. The A's have drawn close to 3 million fans and over 2 million many many times in their history even after Beane and cheap ownership traded established starts years before they hit free agency; it's isn't the fault of the fans that is for sure.
