Are Oakley Sunglasses Worth It? We Put them to the test.
SportRx visited the Oakley headquarters and met Stephen De Mille, who took us to their testing facility and showed us the testing Oakley eyewear goes through. In part four we see the impact tests: high velocity test and high mass test. In the high velocity test a quarter inch steel ball bearing is fired at the lens at 102 mph from point-blank range. In the high mass test a 500g / 1 lb 1 oz steel spike is dropped from 4 ft 2 inches on the lens.

None of the Oakleys other than the "Ballistic" rated or "APEL" line are certified to Z87+ and the MIL-PRF for ballistics protection. I know they claim their lenses are all tested to Z87 but most of their glasses don't have the proper Z87 markings for the certification. Their old M Frames, M Frame 2.0/3.0 have the Z87/Z87+ and the 2.0/3.0/Alpha's meet the blast fragmentation. Their Det Cord and Shocktube also meet the MIL-PRF. Everything else is up in the air. I did my own research and a lot of the lenses are simply too thin (e.g. Flak Jacket / Flak 2.0) compared to the ballistic APEL M Frame 2.0 lenses. I also learned from ESS (a subsidiary of Oakley that deals primarily with military eyewear) that none of the polarized lenses will meet the military blast test but will meet ANSI Z87+ high speed impact due to the polarization process. ESS also puts the proper Z87+ markings on the lens and frames, while I think Oakley only does the Z87 stamping on the lens of the Det Cord model that has the stamping. The difference in Kinetic Energy between Z87+ and the military test is like a factor of 16!

Why does everyone forgot about construction workers when they talk about real live situations? I understand they're marketing it for bike riders, but no one mentions it. Getting struck in the eye is always a high possibility of getting hit with a piece of metal, debris, etc. at high speeds. Maybe expand the market that way. We wear glasses probably more than most occupations and hobbies than anyone else.

Why doesn't Oakley list any safety ratings for the Radar or the Flak 2.0 XL if they pride themselves on their impact resistance and durability?

HI! It is because the Flak 2.0 XL & Radar EV Path frames do not meet ANSI Z87.1 specific safety standards that many industries require on the jobsite. This is why many companies, including Oakley, categorize specific frames as ANSI, which are noted with a certification stamp on the lens as well as the frame. Thank God u made this video 6 years ago...if you upload this video right know, u might have different result from audience. That thing can stand from drop steel approx more than 80 cm high without broken. Try to buy oakley now, and drop it from your dining table, might find it broken. True !! ain't BS it happen to me. price more than hundred USD - the quality 1 USD ( china mirror product might stronger than the original oakkley ). i have some oak's, the latest one i bought about 5 years ago and got no probs at all ( just the lense started peeling and the rubber start peeling, but no issues at all ). but the very late one i bought 2 months ago, 60 cm-BROKE..
