Great info Zach. I often think about your education background and how you run parallel ideas or fractals of parallel theories in your shows. The balance topics in this particular show are amazing balancing the fun tickets and passenger experience with safety and easy for the rower. Brings some cool side ideas after a little reflection on your topic today. Thanks again for your dedication to water sport safety, technology and skills.

I saw Mark Cramer run his 60th lap down NFPayette. He ran the top of Jacob's Latter with the hard push to river right and nailed a rock that nearly threw him from his boat. Quick thinking Mark hooked his oar with his foot as he was going out and managed to keep himself in. It was an amazing maneuver. I might still have the footage somewhere. Not sure where he places his frame on his cat, but I would match whatever hes got on that river.

Hey Zack, I’m really new to rafting, but been paddling other craft for some time. Just want to let you know that your show has helped me getting started rafting immensely. Love your gear setup and technique shows especially. Has really shortened some of my learning curve. Appreciate what your doing! Thanks

Oddly enough, for such a mundane topic, this is one of your best videos yet (IMO). Great insight to things I've often pondered but never really put into words, especially as I see so many Cat's rowing seat forward. Thanks!

Thanks. I thought this was all super obvious info but I kept getting people asking me to cover this in a a video. I'm glad to hear it's helpful.

Makes sense. I once caught a rock with the oar blade and it ripped the oar out of my hand and it hit the back of the passenger in front. Luckily it hit him in the PFD but it did knock him a few feet forward off his seat. We were setup similar to the gear boat diagram but I think he leaned back as the oar came out of my hand. Even with our helmets on I shudder to think of that force hitting his head.

I saw someone get hit in the back of the head. They were fine but it could have been really bad.

Zach, I like every video. I’m a subscriber. I find these videos very helpful. I think if you bought a lapel mic or some kind of mic that would help the channel. Thanks for the videos!

I have a pretty high quality mic on the camera. Is the audio that bad?
@CollinJones13 жыл бұрын
@@GearGarageTV I noticed it was better actually. It’s getting the room though and we want to focus in on those sultry vocals so a lapel mic or vocal mic would be a big improvement! Audio is tough though and I’m no expert. Maybe a wireless lav mic plugged into the camera would be a good option
@CollinJones13 жыл бұрын
Or just a cheaper lav mic synched up in post. It’s extra work but for talking head stuff I think it’s worth it
@franzellers89663 жыл бұрын
I think something was set wrong. I don't think you need a lav for your garage setup, but this sounded bad. I would worry about the internet thinking about my sultry vox though.

I agree with you Zach. Having the weigh centered on a light boat is the way to go. I have tried Idaho style with a cat boat and a passanger in the back. I'm not a fan of that. I prefer rowing from the back any time there is extra weight in the raft or cat. Being further back makes it easier to dump momentum on a heavy boat.
@jasjas4069 Жыл бұрын
Great discussion, based on physics. It belies about every private boat you see with the pile behind the rower. Any thoughts about how you could center up the typical boat with 3 overnight bags, stove, fuel, water etc that winds up in the pile?

Thanks for great videos! 2 questions: should the sides of the frames be exactly centered over the side tubes? My frame on my 16’ boat is about 8-10” too wide. It doesnt overhang the sides but I think Id get better oarlock geometry if my frame was the right width. Big pia tho to cut them down. 2nd question: did you generally advise to sit on a drybox w cooler in front and people in front of coolers for best weight distribution since the cooler is generally heavier than the drybox?
@GearGarageTV3 ай бұрын
It's really hard to properly answer these questions without having way more information
@davidwaclo3 ай бұрын
@@GearGarageTV I think I answered the first by watching another video. You said something like the width of the frame doesn’t matter a lot relative to the width of the boat as long as the oar towers don’t overhang the sides of the boat because they could bang into rocks. But I assume you generally want the side rails centered over the tubes so the frame is in full contact with the top of the side tube. Is that true? My frame is wider than that, so only the cross bars contact the side tubes - I wonder if this is not good for my boat. So Im thinking about cutting down the width. Doing this would have another pro in that you said the oars should be 70% outside the oar lock and 30% inside. Right now Im about 66/33. If I cut down the frame and the oar locks were closer, that would get me closer to 70/30. Its a pain to cut the frame down tho, so hoping to validate my thinking. I appreciate may be not enough to go on.

I have an Aire Super Puma with 2 inflated thwarts (since I generally use this boat as a paddle raft), and I am heading down the Mid Fork of the Salmon and can make an oar frame, gear and a single passenger work leaving in the thwarts, however there would be more convenient space if I removed the thwarts, and in a smaller craft like a Super Puma that would be nice on a 100-mile float. If I remove the thwarts, does the convenience gained by more space, make up for the possible advantages that the thwarts might provide by having the extra flotation? Thanks, and nice presentation.
@GearGarageTV2 күн бұрын
The thwarts provide lateral rigidity. If you have a raft frame you don’t need them.
@anthonybox3 жыл бұрын
I agree with your thoughts and like my frame centered too. That being said, is there a good use case for a stern specific frame in rafting in your opinion? Maybe when one has say 4 guests up front?

Yes, of course. I'm pretty sure I did an episode about stern frames already.

Zak, thanks for all the great info. Have really loved the education. Last year we traded in our Clacka drift for a Maravia raft. So after 20 years we switched from a hard boat to a rubber boat. Deal with the wife was that we still have ability to set it up for fishing. So we have a forward and rear seat frame for fishing, and those can come off for day or multi day trips. The question is, how would you recommend I set up frame and towers for fishing with someone up front and in back vs rafting as explained in this and other video. In the drift boat oars we’re in the middle with my seat set back. And how should I expect the raft to handle vs the drift boat. And tricks to consider? Thanks
@GearGarageTV2 жыл бұрын
I would love to answer your questions but it is way too broad and complicated to answer in a KZbin comment. On top of that I don't have any experience with fishing frames so I'm probably the wrong person to ask.
