OASIS: Every Studio Track Recorded For Champagne Supernova?

James Hargreaves Guitar

3 жыл бұрын

Join James Hargreaves on a journey below the surface of 'Champagne Supernova' to hear a massive array of buried takes, forgotten parts, and weird & wonderful noises hidden deep within the original mix of one of the most dense and complex of the Oasis recordings.
EDIT - Further tracks have been picked out by the subscriber / viewer community:
TRACK 28 - second acoustic guitar track, panned right, piezo sound, lower in the mix (thanks to Jimboobism for that one)
TRACK 29 - audible low A mellotron drone blended with the 2 E bows which stops abruptly at around 7:19, audible in the original track (thanks to Matt Phillips for that one)
UPDATE - Sound Engineer from the WTSMG sessions Nick Brine has responded to the question of the melodica! The ebow/melodica drone is apparently a loop of ebow, melodica AND mellotron! Find out more here - open.spotify.com/show/182j6i1EQxXSJbJQGMeqG2?si=loZHuObpTjW924VmgrVo7w&dl_branch=1
Please let me know if you catch any more and I will add them to the list!

The birdsong effect can be achieved by taking a finger slide and sliding up the high E and B strings past the neck and up by the pick ups. It sounds like Noel's sliding back and forth between the pick up and the end of the neck

Good call with the 2 E-Bow tracks. I always thought that it might be a sampled melodica for infinite sustain. However, the glissando at the end of the songs gives it away that it’s actually a guitar played with a E-Bow.

Other people have commented this, but I would love to see a future video dissecting Bonehead's rhythm guitar sound and how important it is to the overall 'wall of sound' you get in Oasis songs. Particularly in a song like Supersonic, where I've always felt his guitar is especially clear and isolated (whereas in most other songs his and Noel's rhythm parts kinda blend together) and it sounds amazing. Love your work, as always!!

OK... thanks to the golden-eared subscriber / viewer community for these supplemental tracks... TRACK 28 - second acoustic guitar track, panned right, piezo sound, lower in the mix (thanks to Jimboobism for that one). Interesting note - the rhythm is different to Noel's louder track, so this one is probably Bonehead. TRACK 29 - audible low A mellotron drone blended with the 2 E bows which stops abruptly at around 7m19s, audible in the original track (thanks to Matt Phillips for that one) RE BIRDSONG (?) EFFECT - I've had several different suggestions so far on this one. Someone mentioned it is Paul Weller whistling, someone said it is a bottleneck being played over the pickups, someone else said it was an actual recording of birdsong, and someone else suggested pick scrapes on a heavily effects-processed guitar... Let me know if anyone has sources for these and I will update this post. Ta. UPDATE - Sound Engineer from the WTSMG sessions Nick Brine has responded to this question! The ebow/melodica drone is apparently a loop of ebow, melodica AND mellotron! Find out more here - open.spotify.com/show/182j6i1EQxXSJbJQGMeqG2?si=loZHuObpTjW924VmgrVo7w&dl_branch=1 Please let me know if you catch any more and I will add them to the list! JH

Got another potential one re: mellotron. After the first chorus during the quieter sections ie verses and octave guitar solos, I’m not sure if there are very high droning notes, it’s very faint and sounds a bit like the “flutes” sound of a mellotron. I might be wrong as it could just be the harmonics from the ebow guitar parts.
@jaidenbowkett
@jaidenbowkett 3 жыл бұрын
James, I know this website is the least reputable source on the internet but on the personnel section for the song on Wikipedia, Owen Morris is credited for ‘whistle’ so this could potentially be the bird whistling effect. As mentioned though, it probably should be taken with a grain of salt

Noel Gallagher's demo guide vocal track was not completely erased. It is still on the multitracks on the last repeating 'We were getting high' at the end of the song. Even if not heard on the original mix of the song, it is heard on the remix of the song on the What's The Story Morning Glory box set taken from the same pro tools master. I always think this song is a bit too crowded especially at the 2nd interlude but like in a beautiful way. It's like seeing a star going supernova slowly with all the colors, sparks explosions and stuff while I'm high on psychedelic drugs. The waves sfx and melodica part are also magical (which I've always thought as harmonica or accordion) And lastly, there's hope for me to be a professional triangle (THE MIGHTY TRIANGLE) player. Thanks James

Blimey that was really bloody insightful. I've never really thought about that, but you are right... the actual sound itself - the mass of layers in this recording somehow paint the picture of an actual supernova out in space, massive, overwhelming, forceful and moving. I think that might be one of the sharpest comments I've ever had on this channel. Nice one... JH

Superb video James! Thanks very much. Regarding the bassline, I’ve often wondered if the bass in the alternate Brendan Lynch mix on the Morning Glory reissue (CD2, track 13) is a different bass part by Noel. Seems much more active and melodic to me. Higher in the mix too, relative to Owen M’s mix. Maybe Lynch found this in the multitrack when he was remixing(?).
@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Re the remix, i think that was added in by Lynch himself, along with some of the organ sounds that can be heard early on in the mix. To be honest, I think the bassline on the BL remix is probably a little more advanced than Noel's playing, personally

Some of the mellotron plugins I have used have ebow tape samples, not sure if these were available for the original instruments, so technically the stem could be both ebow and mellotron?

He's just doing short couple of fret jumps up n down at a time, maybe like down tthree frets up two, obviously not exactly that, but do something like that on each of the 4 lower strings, one of them should be the one that makes that sound.

16:20 I’m pretty sure the “laughter” is actually seagulls recorded by McCartney. Might even be played backwards aswell I can’t remember. Thinks it’s in the anthology book. There is laughter recorded on the end of sgt peppers though.

There's also a short Noel backing vocal singing "where were you while we were getting high" - they're more clearly heard on the Brendan Lynch mixes and also the Super Audio CD mix - not sure if they're as audible on the Rock Band stems.

@@JamesHargreavesGuitar It is very difficult to hear on the standard mix unless you know what you're looking for. I'd heard the Lynchmob beats mix back in 1996 with the Noel vocal at 3.58 ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIbPoXqqfM9_iac ) . Then in move up to Lynch's more standard mix, you hear the Noel vocal first at 1.58 then repeatedly backing up Liam throughout the song ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/epSokH-ApsSHb80 ). The Super Audio Mix also ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKSqnX-Jbq-gqas ) has this, most clearly at 6.30 where Liam changes the way he sings the line. When you listen back to the original it's still hard to make out, but you can sense it, the line has that little bit more depth when you listen out for it.

Great vid. Re. The mellotron, I know you’ve established that the ‘melodica’ is actually two Ebow tracks, but - hear me out - at the 7:21 mark in the outro it sounds like a lower, warmer note in the Ebow part suddenly ends, almost as if someone has taken their finger off a mellotron key...but the two Ebow notes carry on playing until the very end. Is it possible that throughout the end of the song there is a mellotron playing a drone note under the Ebow parts? Have a listen...
@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Very fascinating possibility! So the upper two notes are the two e-bow tracks and there is a lower drone which is the mellotron... I think that is definitely a possibility. You can hear him slide down off one of the ebow tracks in the outro, but like you say, the deepest note just stops dead... very interesting

Hi James, What do you think of The Brendan Lynch remix of the track that was featured on the Deluxe Edition of WTSMG?
@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rhys, its good, the only thing I dont like on it is the phaser effect that is on various parts of the mix at different times. I think its a good contrast to the original mix, because its so spacious and open, a lot more sparse than the absolutely overwhelming amount of stuff in the Owen Morris version. I'll be honest though, I do prefer the Morris mix, and I tend to use the BL remix mostly for reference if I want to hear certain buried tracks a little clearer.

Another class video of one of the best song of 90s. I do still think it's too crowded.. then I came across Brendan Lynch mix which is toned down & some twist in the bass line with some flange/phaser fx (?). I'd like to know what's your opinion...Thank you!
@JamesHargreavesGuitar
@JamesHargreavesGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah - the BL mix is actually a really interesting listen - its what Champagne Supernova would have been with a sparse, spacious mix, rather than the dense complicated monster it is in reality! The bassline in that one is new, also I think the organ that can be heard early on, and yes there is a slow phaser or something over parts of it. Other than that, it's just the pre-recorded tracks mixed in a much more open, spacious way. I like it - everything except the phase effect actually.

The waves (Noel said in an interview once) were recordings of Bonehead, Liam and I'm guessing Guigsy messing around in a canoe on the lake (that apparently you have to cross to get to the recording studio). They were messing around doing that while Noel was working hard in the studio.
