I love these 3 in my small woods plots. They just keep re-growing through all the grazing. My plan for the beginning of August was to plant 1/2 acre of winter peas, 1/2 acre of lab lab, and 1/2 acre of brassica in 3 consecutive rectangles and fence them in till Oct. That would leave me with 1.5 acres of perimeter land outside of the fence along with a few woods plots that I will plant with Cereal rye and oats. This does include a few brush lines and strips of goldenrod I left for some breakup cover through the plots and around them. My thought is the deer may stay out of my expensive crop and let it grow if I give them the grain munchies outside the fence. I already know the woods plots work as I did it last year. Oh, I also will add a scarecrow. This is hopefully going to work this year but is mostly an experiment for next year when I grow my awesome crop of corn and beans. My though was if it works I could fence the corn and beans and surround with clover. Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for the videos they are giving me great ideas. Or maybe I'm over thinking it. By the way, did the soil test and got everything where it needs to be for now.

Roy thanks for watching and commenting! Yes sir I think that will work well the clover will give them something to eat outside the fence , and with a scarecrow plus a fence you should be able to keep them out of the expensive plots….just don’t let them Get use to that scarecrow, move it around and change things up on it. If they ever get to where they aren’t scared of it, it’s not good. This is up to you, but I would overseer with some cereal rye once you get your first frost and the lab lab dies off, that will fill it the bare spots and add some attraction! Thanks!

@DIYfoodplotpro yeah, good advice. I'll get 100 lbs of ,cereal rye for the plot. I will go back in Oct to pull the fence. Would this be too early to seed in the rye?

@@royguidry1311 I think you would be good putting the cereal rye in October. I shoot for around the 15-25 of October and I’m a good bit south of you. I think you would be fine with that.

Good stuff Wes. I have rye as my number one as we are in the golden triangle of western IL. I have tried oats and they just do not get near the deer activity and winter kill like you say. I had not heard of the half grown rye kill trick on drilling into it. That’s a good one.

Bucks forage oats real advantages come from their ability to over winter in colder environments. A lot of the other types of oats will die in the winter, but the buck forage oats can handle the cold much better.

Another great video! What is your opinion on sowing cereal grains into an already established perennial clover field? Would it work with a no-till drill?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Жыл бұрын
Brad thanks for watching and commenting! Absolutely, with a no till drill you would make easy work of it. I honestly don’t plant many clover plots on my farms, as I’ve had much better luck with corn, soybeans, alfalfa, cereal grains and brassicas. But I understand clover is a good choice for many, and yes no problem at all drilling them into the clover, it’s only going to the make that plot stronger. Thanks

I'm here in SC and I'm going to throw out some clover with rye. I'm just wondering what type fertilizer to use. I put turnips, rape and radishes earlier with a little urea. Thanks. Enjoyed the video.

Hey mark, the cereal rye will need 30-50 lbs of nitrogen, the clover will make its own nitrogen, as long as you either inoculate the seed or you have the rhizobia bacteria in the soil already from growing legumes in the past. (It’s never a bad idea to treat the seed with inoculant, and it won’t hurt a thing even if your soil already has the bacteria in it) Clover will need p and k….did you happen to pull a soil sample at this location?
@markc2036
@markc2036 Жыл бұрын
@DIYfoodplotpro no I didn't pull a soil sample but I know better for next year. Could I still get sample tested before I throw out my clover and rye? I'm doing that in Sept. So I can still put nitrogen down even though clover doesn't need it? Thanks
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Жыл бұрын
@@markc2036you would probably have soil test results back if you got on it ASAP. Without a soil test it’s a blank sheet, and not knowing your soils it would just be a wild guess recommendation. Yes you need the nitrogen for the cereal rye, it won’t hurt having it down, the clover just doesn’t need it. If you don’t get it back in time, I’d put a couple hundred pounds of 20-20-20. Or something of that equivalent. Next year when you sew the cereal rye into the clover, you won’t need any nitrogen, as the clover will supply it for the rye. Thanks

Just my 2 cents worth, but for COST considerations, I'd swap the preferred order to #1 wheat, #2 rye, and #3 oats. I can get 2 bags of cover crop wheat for the cost of one bag of winter rye. The oats are pricy also seem to be gone at the first hard killing freeze.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Жыл бұрын
Clark thanks for watching and commenting, I agree wheat is definitely the cheapest option, and buck forage oats are definitely the most expensive. I’ve never had the buck forage oats to die off, I thought they would for sure last year with as cold as it got, but they were still growing well into the spring when I terminated them. Wheat is a good pull, but in my area there are thousands of acres of winter wheat, so maybe the deer are going to something that isn’t as widely available like the oats. Thanks for sharing what is working for you in your neck of the woods! I appreciate it!

Great information and tips Wes! Thank you for sharing your food plot knowledge with us. We also plant mixtures of the 3 (wheat, oats, cereal rye) here in the South. My fields get hit so hard that I normally overseed them with cereal rye in early December. We plant a lot of Elbon Cereal Rye around here but I have found the deer here prefer Nelson Cereal Rye if you can get it. We also plant a lot of Marshall ryegrass for winter pastu6and the deer love it as well.....and no; Marshall dies of when summer arrives and does not reseed itself. You have to replant it each Fall as it is an annual ryegrass seed.

SouthEast Ohio - Planning on tilling in Cereal Rye and broadcasting ontop clover (fusion and Clover) both Whitetail institute products. All my soybean plots failed this spring but the Wi Fusion did great so I'm going with that and cereal rye now on all my plots. Anyway, weeds and crabgrass are wearing my plots out so should I just plan on killing the rye next spring with herbicide and going full clover/chickory? I'm just a little worried adding the rye will prevent me from being able to kill the crabgrass this fall and it will overtake the clover?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Жыл бұрын
So if I’m understanding your right, you’ve got clover plots with crabgrass in them that your about to plant in cereal rye? If that’s the case, just spray the clover with poast before you plant cereal rye that will take care of the grass. If your meaning your about to start sewing a new plot of clover and cereal rye together and worried about next spring, you can simply mow it, spray it with poast next spring, or you can let It mature and die. Let me know if they didn’t answer your question.

Is the a Idifference between oats and folage oats.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Жыл бұрын
Pat thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! Forage oats are bred specifically for maximum amount of biomass per plant, not necessarily the highest grain yield….which is exactly what we want for our wildlife food plots. There are many different types of oats out there, but I’ve always stuck with buck forage oats, I’ve had the best of luck with them, however they do come with a hefty price tag. Hope this helps!

Plant Triticale, Soybeans, Swamp White Oak and Persimmon trees. Suppress Coyote before Fawning season. Provide Water source with a gravel skirt and a covered mineral salt block. Salt blocks will increase animal health and often results in increased twinning of fawns.

Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents that host ticks, attract and feed pit vipers, Bobcats and Coyotes. Due to Forestry Management practices there are not enough quality nesting cavities for Screech Owls. Screech Owls mostly eat Deer mice and White-footed Forest mice just like Copperhead snakes.
