Unfortunately, lots of pet owners of non-working dogs and non-dog owners don't understand the precision and focus required in competitive obedience. It's absolutely one of the most difficult dog sports to train for and do well in. Sure, it's not as flashy as agility and won't be appreciated by non-dog sports people.

Boarder collies are very smart most people aren’t smart enough for these dogs. They love to make their owners happy

It's funny, obedience in Germany looks a little bit different 🤔 The hand on the left side is supposed to move freely too and you are supposed to walk naturally, in this video here they are walking like soldiers with one arm up to the hip😅 And the dog should walk next to your leg without space but also without pushing you, in this video the darker one is leaning against her leg.

How do they train the dogs to do this?
@bunniesbunniesbunnie2 жыл бұрын
you start out with basic obedience and a hell of a lot of treats. you teach them a command like "me!" or "eyes!" or some such. and eventually it turns into this.
@briantaylor12322 жыл бұрын
Same way you learn anything. Break it down into really small pieces, practice, then put it all together. But mostly practice and having fun.
@jennyt90022 жыл бұрын
Zak B is talking total shite. Training a solid competition heel is way more work than simply feeding treats and teaching the dog to look at you. You need to teach the dog hind end awareness so that they can pivot with your body. Then you need to teach correct movement and head position.

I know it's very difficult to train a dog to do all this but I have to admit I absolutely HATE it when dogs have to walk keeping their heads like that. It's so unnatural and weird.
@tgrier59192 жыл бұрын
I can assure you the dogs do it on their own volition... i hated seeing it as well and thought there was no way that was comfortable but then i got a gsd taught them basic obedience that included heal and realized they did that because they want to keep eye contact with you... they either want to read your facial expression or theyre trained to focus on a mark which is their left hand, for competitions like this though they like to tighten the behaviour
@Aimee0206 Жыл бұрын
They walk like that because they're focusing entirely on their handler. They're not forced to carry their heads like that.

@mobstercrow7515 Жыл бұрын
They don't do this 24/7. Only while training and doing competitions. The dogs aren't forced to do it and they don't have to do it. All they are doing is looking at their handler, you would know this if you had a well trained dog. My service dog is well trained and he always looks at me while we are walking even though I've never made him do it.

@@bunniesbunniesbunnie Humans and dogs are vertebrates - their anatomy is basically the same. No-one would force or even allow a human to walk around like that because of the risk of compacting vertebrae and/or spinal chord damage.
