“willing slaves” is so true… it’s not enough for them to take what they want. they want to be GIVEN, willingly and passionately, to validate their individual worth as men. But that choice to give also can’t be fully independent, because their ego and insecurity can’t bear even the 10% possibility that they might not get what they want, thus shattering the facade of superiority and importance. So very true still today, and in so many areas of life

it's bizarre, because wanting love as well as obedience seems to make the issue blurrier and more difficult for men to understand; it happens all the time today in such obvious ways. there's all these men who bury sexism under "i just want to be loved." and in that framework, somehow a woman suppressing her emotions and desires and giving up her future for him stops being seen as cruel, or as something painful and difficult, and it starts being seen as simply another part of loving someone. all this emotional labor - and actual labor - that women are expected to do is somehow made invisible underneath that word.

I read all these poems back in my English major days. Re the Browning poems, I understood that Robert Browning wrote chiefly horror (didn't he keep a skull and tarantula on his desk?) So Browning is using horror to critique how patriarchy silences women's creativity, or do you think he's in on it and writing horror porn?
@earthtonellie2 жыл бұрын
@@tempest2000 Great question! Robert Browning was actually known to have pretty progressive ideas regarding gender issues; he was married to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the woman who wrote Aurora Leigh, and was always supportive of her and her pursuits. She definitely outshined him during their lifetime. His depiction of some of the men in these stories was definitely to make a point regarding men’s possessiveness over women. You should check out more from his collection “Men and Women”!

As one woman noted in the 1900s all the love stories they had were really just us focusing on the man no matter he was pursuing the woman and her reactions were a part of it all it was all his cookies for the perusing the story was really a him story not a her story no her story came later after the wooing after she was won the part where her grit, her labor, the stories focus would be put upon her the post woo stage of actual life living with this male and taking care of him then their children and all her struggles to keep the family together that's the woman's story and that story was never told, always left out, leaving all women and girls ill prepared for the truths, struggle, grit, and toil of their lives leaving them in shock, despair, and bitterness of the lie they were sold via those books which informed real life workings in courtship and what was suppose to be right within it and the expectations it set up. They've been lying to women in print for 100 years but far more before that on what is love, romance, and normal relationships. the devotion your talking about is just coveture talk he wants his fourth limb to behave and it's not just marriage they have soical, political, entertainment, and cultural coveture.

Males hate the truth coming from women. But they bask in hate towards women coming from other males…how typical.
