In mid evil times this type of dogs was used by knights and he was taken into battles by knights. It is a very old breed of dogs. In Serbia and Macedonia, we have a Shar Ovchar dog. Shar for Shar Mountain. Used by Macedonians, Serbian, and Albanian people. Bulgarians have their own breed of Ovchar. BTW, Ovchar in translation means shepard dog.

I've enjoyed this series. I have 2 COs on a small farm in Idaho. They have a job guarding my cattle and I also love to take them with me backcountry skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. They're a wonderful breed. Mine spent a lot of time at the local ski resort as puppies and learned to be human friendly in public/crowds. My nightmare was having one bite a child so I spent a ton of time on public socialization. They are guardians on the farm though and need me to show them that a person is welcome in order for them to allow them onto the land. Love the breed and this series.

@@ronberry65 My female had to be trained not to go after them, but my male naturally ignored/guarded them. They naturally try and keep pigeons off of the barn and the few times I've had hawks/eagles come after my chickens, the dogs go after the predator birds. They can't catch them, but being out with the chickens is enough to keep the predators from circling back.

To be fair to his previous owners, there aren’t many people who have a situation that’s right for dogs like Kevin, really enjoying seeing his progress with you! 😊👍
@NativeNYerChicHK Жыл бұрын
This is why people have got to stop choosing dogs by how “cute” they are 🙄 It’s insufferable and so dangerous to the life of a dog. You get a dog like Kevin and don’t meet his needs, Kevin can quickly become a dangerous problem. It’s not fair to the dog that’s been bred for generations for a specific job but it not being fulfilled and instead left to go crazy instead, but it’s what we do anyway. I’m horrified that people don’t do one ounce of research before picking a dog breed. But then blame the dog when he can’t live in your environment but only because it’s not conducive to a healthy existence for that specific dogs breed.
@Barbara-lu7ch10 ай бұрын
Perhaps they NEEDED a guard dog. The police don't always do their job, as many criminals know. And cameras don't mean much. And a gun won't wake up at 3am to stop an intruder. That being said, COs are a handful, I have one and six years later the person I got her from still gives me training support. The scary thing is that anyone can breed these and sell them for a quick buck.
@Barbara-lu7ch10 ай бұрын
@@NativeNYerChicHKthey may have needed a guard dog, human safely should always come before a dog's personal needs. Unfortunately there are breeders who only want a quick buck. The person I got mine from drove from Ohio to Chicago to make sure I would be able to control her.

Absolutely amazing to see how well Kevin is trained. Its rare to see Ovcharka being this obedient outside security services and serious shepherds - but maybe also its the fact that many folks are not putting in the dedicated time and effort to understand the breed and get the best out of the them like in this video - this is like the original shepherds who would use them for their flocks of Sheep and Goats.

He got plenty of exposure with dogs, people, kids, and animals. Sitting and platz(laydown) was also tough on his big body to switch on a dime. Best dog I ever had that never went through Schutzhund training, but he was way more intimidating than any of my protection dogs, especially walks at night. @@ClearConscience. I have spoken with various Vets (one from a Veterinarian University) and if you don’t de-sex a male/female (at an age appropriate time) and you have no intentions of ever breeding them, then that in itself can become a big problem too. Our Ovcharka is nearly identical and age and size. Ours is about to turn 11 months and acts almost exactly like this. We can't let him play with any other dogs either he only plays with our tibetan mastiff- he's just so big and he doesn't realize his size sometimes, but his mannerisms are almost identical, the recalls, the not wanting to leave the down stay. Great job on the transformation, super happy to see him do well. Any idea who is breeder was/where he came from? I'd be curious to know if he came from one of the livestock lines- or a true estate guardian lines. I wish he was a female, I'd offer to take him off your hands, don't think he'd do well with another similar male.

Kevin is spectacular ❤ I’m really impressed at how you’ve managed to get his recall ! as the current owner of an 18 month old English mastiff, and the previous owner of an Italian great Dane and a great Pyrenees. I know that the guardian breeds are just notoriously bad at recall because they’re doing their job protecting you and patrolling . Personally, I do not love the shock collars on any of those breeds because they are frankly too big for it to really do something if you needed it to, and it might just end up making them more aggressive but in your last video, I know you mentioned the importance of not relying on it. I am currently doing prong for heel with my English mastiff simply because he outweighs me, but it’s a training tool, and not an endgame. I would be very interested to learn more about Kevin and see how his temperament and personality develop. I do have a country property and we do have coyotes, although no livestock, but we also have a place in the city and we go back-and-forth between the two.

This dog is for serious experience owners. This dog is the most guarding aggressive of them all. If you are an urban owner, they have to be integrated with socialising from the very beginning like introducing them to the dog groomers immediately as babies and regularly...

In an urban setting the biggest problem you will have with this dog is all the other dog owners who know nothing about dogs and have never heard of LGD or CO s. I get lectured by pit bull owners because I won't let them near us. My CO is not aggressive. He is very protective. I was attacked by a pit bull and had my arm seriously torn. My CO took it off me. He not sees pit bulls as threats so I am super careful. I don't want to injure or kill someone else's dog because of bad owners. People ask me why I don't train him to not react to put bulls. Why would I not allow my dog to protect me? Everyone needs to be careful. CO owners a little more than most. Great information and understanding of a wonderful dog.
