One of the first synths I ever put my hands on at the music store. I was 17-18. I'd buy whatever drum equipment I could afford that week and then check out the synths. I fell in love with the 'Monster' patch on the Matrix. It began a long fascination with synthesizers I still have. Great job playing!

Great sounding synth if you clean the pins of the Curtis chips and reseat them. I only recommend this for people with some familiarity around circuit boards. Great for pads and polysynth patches. Tons of modulation capability although it is tedious as hell to program without an editor. The great thing is, that these really are not that expensive compared to other vintage gear.

Recently sold mine (that I had bought new in the 80's) and kinda regret it. I wanted a synth with knobs because programming the Matrix-6 IS a pain, so I bought a Dave Smith Rev 2. Don't get me wrong - great synth with incredible capabilities, lush and brazen, but there's something about the sound of the Matrix-6 I miss. In particular, the string patches just can't be beat. While it only has 6 voices vs. the Rev 2's 8, it still to me has more of an analog feel. Miss it.

Found my Matrix 6 for $385. I was expecting weird and wild sounds (which it can do) but what I received is one of the most intricately detailed synths that just oozes expression like no other. Well, maybe FM. But it can that too!

I have heard that this is not the best synth for bass sounds. I've seen one listed locally and am thinking about it. Do you think the comment about bass sounds is fair? And are these preset or custom voices?

Mmm..well..it depends of the style of music you want to do. If it’s more electronic style (EDM, DnB etc..) I would go for another alternatives (Waldorf Blofeld, Novation A Station, Yamaha AN200, AN1X…etc. If you want to play more 80’s (synthwave…etc) I recommend you check the Roland JX-10 or JX8P. Really good basses on there. Hope it helps!

Any polysynth can sound good with chorus and reverb added to mask its limitations. I own a Matrix 6 and it doesn't stack up to my OB6 Desktop Module as far as getting the Oberheim sound. So I use the Matrix 6 as a MIDI controller to play the OB6. 😁
