I got one when they came out. In the early 80's. Could do some cool stuff with that many voices. I even used it on a Willie Nelson album to simulate a harmonica. I messed with it till it sounded just like one. Also got the Memory Moog but the DX7 with the card cage full of DX7 modules quickly became the go to sound of that era. You could make it sound like anything too. You were only limited by your own imagination. It really had a good solid digital sound of it's own. For greasy analog those old Moogs, Arps and Oberheims still rule.

That synth made van Halen jump work. Lyle mays created his signature hollow Reed whistling soundsscapes with OB-8. Rush used it to stand out from the rock crowd. The OB-8 was the synth equivalent of the baseball utility man , all around usefulness. Thanks Claudio for bringing the history.
@ihavenosub Жыл бұрын
That synth wasn't use in van halen jump the synth that was used was the older version of it the oberheim ob-Xa but theory said that an even older version the ob-x was used in studio
@oldvoltage388 Жыл бұрын
Lyle Mays used an 8 voice or a 4 voice Oberheim, not an OB-8. Rush used an OB-X. Jump was recorded on an OB-X but the video features an OB-Xa. The OB-8 was not there for literally any of that stuff.

Jump was played on an OBX at first but it kept breaking down. The rest of the 1984 album was finished on an OBXA. Yes in the jump video he is playing an OBXa. The 5150 album was the OB8.
@synthartist693 жыл бұрын
@Freline It was the OBX... The iconic sound of Jump was played on an Oberheim keyboard. According to Wikipedia: The Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer was used in the video of “Jump”, and can be seen in video footage from their follow-up tour. However, it is a common misconception that it was used on the recording itself. The recording features its predecessor Oberheim OB-X, played through a Marshall amplifier stack. Even though it features a somewhat thicker sound than the OB-Xa, due to its discrete circuitry used instead of Curtis chips, it had a bad reputation of being unstable on the road. www.synthtopia.com/content/2009/06/30/van-halen-jump-demo-oberheim-obx-a/
