I find that M1 Piano is slightly different from real piano, but it's just the lush sound of it and being absolutely pitch perfect and fun play chords on, or tinkle whatever. It's unique. I bought an M1 a little while ago. So many tunes I already know and I hear again and I question, "was that actually a Korg M1?" The Organ2 preset is a huge one as well, still hear it in commercial dance today, mostly the lowest octave end.

A truely universal synthesizer workstation. Eventhough it was famous for it’s use in house and dance music, it also found it’s way to other genres like gothic darkwave music. There is even a version of Gary Numan’s Down in the park (a live version form the late 90’s) where the famous M1 piano sound is used. It’s instantly reconizable when you hear it. Some game music composers have also used the M1, I reconize the Universe sound in the intro of the Darkman videogame on the amiga and other sounds in Shadow Of The Beast. The Panflute sound reminds me a lot of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES. The M1’s legacy is everywhere and I quite enjoy using the M1 iPad app for it’s sounds. This synth made a huge impact on so many genres of music that it deserves the name “Universal Synth”.😇

This keyboard seemed to encapsulate all of the functionality and tone quality we take for granted in the amateur level keyboards that Yamaha and Casio make today. Just to have a realistic piano sound was a marvel back then without spending thousands of dollars on a Jupiter or Juno. The interface, effects and synthesizer functions did not seem to be as integrated as well as they potentially could have been; as if they needed to invent a new type of computer and software language to properly enable ease of function. Nevertheless the available sounds were amazing. I was a teenager when this instrument came out, I played on some of my friends instruments but never owned one and later I briefly owned the 01 WD but never used it much being in College at the time. One day if I ever get a decent studio space I will get one as well as the Karma; not to shine up and admire but to use in composition and recordings.

The first time I played a Korg M1 bank in 1988, I thought that I'd died and gone to heaven! No other synthesiser at the time sounded so 'realistic'! The piano, sax guitars, strings, vocals, vibraphone, trumpet, drums, etc etc etc. Korg really made great use of that 4mb of pcm rom! The digital fx were phenomenal for the time and it really was the first true workstation wilh it's very limited 8 track sequencer with its crappy by today's standards 48ppqn note resolution. What was sorely missing was a 3.5' floppy disk drive which existed in other synths at the time like the DX7IIFD, Ensoniq SQ80 and Roland D20. Korg did make a separate disk drive for the M1 later on if I remember correctly? I ended up buying a Korg T3EX as it was IMHO what the M1 should have been in the first place... The M1 on steroids as it was known! Saying that, the M1 has made its place in synthesiser history by becoming the best selling keyboard of all time and having a production cycle lasting well over 5 years.

My god hearing all these sounds takes me back ...I got a Korg M1 way back in 1994 and I loved it ..i think i paid around £1,200 for it (that was a lot of money then) ..I'm no great musician but could pick songs up by ear and teach myself how to play them ..this keyboard is sound of an entire generation you could clearly hear it in popular songs of the day back then

I'm a guitarist by trade, but I needed to throw together a quick inexpensive key rig to work with a small cover band. An Ipad running the Korg iM1 app, 2 cheap 61 key controllers and a powered USB hub... gets me through everything I need to do from old school Motown up through Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars. Korg outdid themselves with that soundset.

I love having iM1 on my iPad Mini. So much fun to play with, even if I'm usually using my little Akai "mini" as the controller. Synth in a backpack.

Paul Alford iM1 is great but if ill go to a gig ill use a midi controller with built in sounds.. or maybe a keyboard as a controller coz if something happens to your ipad or ios youll never know

I kept my last Iphone specifically for a back up. I keep it in my bag loaded with Sampletank and enough comparable patches to decently replicate what I get from the Ipad. I also keep enough of a back-up set loaded onto my current phone to get me out of a jam if needed.

Thanks for the cool trip down memory lane. The M1 was my first synth and years later I added the iconic T1 to my setup. Korg had its own unmistakable classic sounds. Great video!

I bought one brand new in December 1990. Great gigging instrument for the era. Served me well. Bought an 01/W in early 1996. Very different machine but both were wonderful to use and play.

Yay Pick Bass! That's me playing bass with dead strings with a pick. It started as a joke to imitate "The Wild Wild West" theme. Turned out to be pretty useful. Love you channel Dr!

Dr. Mix is always having too much fun. Between his Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50, & TR-808 and Korg M-1 and - it's like a Trip down the Memory Lane of Music. Stay Safe brother.

the only one I could identify. Apparently they used a lot of M1 in Innuendo.

07 Symphonic is probably the most used preset on the album, most notably "Bijou" and "Don't Try So Hard". Also the first sound 00 universe is used on the intro to don't try... The string sound on "The Show Must Go On" is also an M1 but the sound is heavily modified, as is the title track.

I even think the conga sound of 09 was used for ‘These are the days of our lives’.

When I first saw one of these at EU Wurltizer in Boston, they were $2500. Back then, the only keys with piano samples were Kurzweils, which cost $20,000. I bought one when the price was about $1500 and immediately got a gig as a keyboard player in a show band playing all the horn parts as well as piano, organ and strings. I made more money with that piece of gear than anything else I've ever owned.

Yamaha's SY series actually improved upon the DX series IMO, especially the 77 (which I own) and the 99 (which I've played).
