"usable today"? I think that 30 years too short to our hearing ability evolve into something another. We can still make music with thousands years old instruments.

This was wonderful! Thanks so much.I bought an M1 shortly after its release and then had the ex module installed by a Korg technician. It stopped working a few years ago. Turns out one of the boards fried and melted. Unbelievably, a neighbor fixed it. He died a couple months later at the beginning of the pandemic. What a gift he gave me!

I find that M1 Piano is slightly different from real piano, but it's just the lush sound of it and being absolutely pitch perfect and fun play chords on, or tinkle whatever. It's unique. I bought an M1 a little while ago. So many tunes I already know and I hear again and I question, "was that actually a Korg M1?" The Organ2 preset is a huge one as well, still hear it in commercial dance today, mostly the lowest octave end.

A truely universal synthesizer workstation. Eventhough it was famous for it’s use in house and dance music, it also found it’s way to other genres like gothic darkwave music. There is even a version of Gary Numan’s Down in the park (a live version form the late 90’s) where the famous M1 piano sound is used. It’s instantly reconizable when you hear it. Some game music composers have also used the M1, I reconize the Universe sound in the intro of the Darkman videogame on the amiga and other sounds in Shadow Of The Beast. The Panflute sound reminds me a lot of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES. The M1’s legacy is everywhere and I quite enjoy using the M1 iPad app for it’s sounds. This synth made a huge impact on so many genres of music that it deserves the name “Universal Synth”.😇

People tended to use the TR-909 on 90's house, dance and pop songs because of it sounds and it fitted in so well. That's not to say that the Korg M1 drums sounds were bad though. The TR-808 sounds as unrealistic as it gets but its unique.

I had one and loved it until an airline butchered it. I always loved the M1's joystick vs. separate pitch/mod wheels- for whatever reason, Korg never went exactly back to that design, I thought the newer plastic-covered oval version felt cheaper. My favorite stock preset was probably 42, Overture. I also loved pitch-bendable drums!

"Korg never went exactly back to that design" - That would be because the M1 JS design actually was horrible, and broke far more often than it should have. The current JS design, (Kronos, Krome), is much better.

This keyboard seemed to encapsulate all of the functionality and tone quality we take for granted in the amateur level keyboards that Yamaha and Casio make today. Just to have a realistic piano sound was a marvel back then without spending thousands of dollars on a Jupiter or Juno. The interface, effects and synthesizer functions did not seem to be as integrated as well as they potentially could have been; as if they needed to invent a new type of computer and software language to properly enable ease of function. Nevertheless the available sounds were amazing. I was a teenager when this instrument came out, I played on some of my friends instruments but never owned one and later I briefly owned the 01 WD but never used it much being in College at the time. One day if I ever get a decent studio space I will get one as well as the Karma; not to shine up and admire but to use in composition and recordings.

The first time I played a Korg M1 bank in 1988, I thought that I'd died and gone to heaven! No other synthesiser at the time sounded so 'realistic'! The piano, sax guitars, strings, vocals, vibraphone, trumpet, drums, etc etc etc. Korg really made great use of that 4mb of pcm rom! The digital fx were phenomenal for the time and it really was the first true workstation wilh it's very limited 8 track sequencer with its crappy by today's standards 48ppqn note resolution. What was sorely missing was a 3.5' floppy disk drive which existed in other synths at the time like the DX7IIFD, Ensoniq SQ80 and Roland D20. Korg did make a separate disk drive for the M1 later on if I remember correctly? I ended up buying a Korg T3EX as it was IMHO what the M1 should have been in the first place... The M1 on steroids as it was known! Saying that, the M1 has made its place in synthesiser history by becoming the best selling keyboard of all time and having a production cycle lasting well over 5 years.

Still sounds good after all these years. I had an O1WFD which further enhanced these patches. Definitely one of the best keyboards I have ever owned.

I still have my 01WFD - and using it often. 3.5 floppy disk drive still works and and can sysex to my PC. The sequencer is just too good.

Great video! This is another one my my favorites. I really like the bells, flute, and dreampad. The sounds take you to another universe. I've used this in a few of my tunes as well. :) Take care and keep the great work up. I love your video quality. It's very professional and you are definitely a great musician. Keep up the great work. I look forward to more wonderful videos. Take care, Sam.

Got this in my high school, and after 30+ years I still enjoy designing interesting sounds out of its PCM and digitalized analog waveforms. Granted it's no true Analog or FM synth, but lots of time you can get close if you are good. You can isolate out the attack of PCM, which then can be combined with DWGS or PCM loop to create 'synth acoustic' sounds that can only be synthesized by 8-operator FM. It takes a creative mind(not preset player) to fully explore M1's potential !

It is amazing that this synthesizer can be used even now. For example, with it you can even write music for films, while the Roland D-50 is intended more for pop music. Many Korg M1 presets are amazing even now, let alone the 80s of the last century. Many modern plugins don't sound that interesting. And here - digital technologies of the 80s, when computing power and memory were very limited. It seems that technology has gone somewhere wrong since then. It's good that there is a VST plugin for this synthesizer.

I've had the 19'' rack module with half a dozen memory cards for about 20 years. It's served me well for a couple of albums. Never toured with it, it lives and stays in my studio. Thinking of downsizing and moving it on. £450-500 would probably take it. It's spotless.

I think that you're hearing the difference between cheap and more expensive keyboards and synthesizers. Most of the cheaper instruments from the past are in garbage piles where as the quality equipment is still in use. The same logic applies to cars and wine.
