Oberheim OB-X8 Sound design Tutorial on Andromeda A6

As you might know I recently did a comparison video on the SEM Filter Section from the OB-X8 vs the A6. Thanks to some comments e. g. relateted of Mono vs Stereo on the OB-X8 I tried the basic sound again and tried to improve it. Here are my results an my tipps for sound design, if you have an A6 allready in your studio and don't can't or want afford the OB-X8.
The Alesis Andromeda A 6 has 16 Voices, 2 VCO plus 2 Sub-VCO, 4 LFO, 3 Envelopes and extremely wide modulation options. It consists of two Filter Sections, the Moog Ladder Filter from early Moogs and the SEM Filter from Oberheim (12 dB LO, HP, BP and Notch plus state variable). Also both filter can be mixed. In the envelope section you can choose different shapes and combine them to get a very close analog feeling of typical envelope designs of the 70/80 ies. Plus you can randomize panning by S/H or LFO. I show you some tricks how to get the great and unbelievably silky sound of the OB-X8 quite close.

Two things come to my mind... LFOs on the A6 should be in polyphonic mode... And all auto tune should be turned off. I also use the oscillators levels a little quieter, like 8% each. I was a little shocked by the staticness of its sound, it doesn't sound like that on mine.

Thank you very much for your tips. I have to admit, that I am quite new on the Andromeda and I am exploring right now. I am very happy about each information I can get about it. I already was reading in this great additional manual, which some people created for it. I will try about the poly LFO mode. It’s so funny The OB X8 it’s just instant gratification and sweetspot whereas on other synthesisers, like a A6 or Solaris you really have to work for a great sound.

@@vintagesynthsyep, the A6 is more like a polyphonic modular synth. Closer to an Xpander than an OB... But for simple sounds it shouldn't be much of a problem. You can do 1000 things the OB-X8 can't even dream of. It takes a little extra time, but it definitely worth it.

@@juno6 sorry to ask again. Is there a special LFO polyphonic mode? I couldn’t find it. Just unison and polyphone mode for voice stacking, I used it also slightly

@@vintagesynths I'm glad to help you! The LFOs are always polyphonic, but under certain conditions they can act as if they were monophonic... Like when in sync. The "problem" is that when you load a patch or init a patch, the LFOs will be phase locked between voices, simply because they're digital and they begin oscillating all at the same time. You can change that by, for example, slightly modulate the LFO rate with keytracking, or modulating the phase with sample and hold with the S&H set to VOXTRG and TRGSMP (so you get a new value for each note). They also must be in FREERN mode on. The combinations are endless, the LFO section on the A6 is probably the most advanced and complex LFO ever.
