I suspect many differences are due to gain staging differences in the mixer section. I’m still not clear if the T6 uses a cp3-type mixer. That section is the secret sauce of the Moog-it’s highly reactive to the combined level of the VCOs.

This demo is very good. It's always tempting to own a mini-moog for the sake of having it. However there seems to be some small areas where the minimoog is a minimoog in sound. If thats worth it I think the decision should be a minimoog. But many of the fat sounds I like in my setup is covered from my Trigon :) And not to mention how it speeds up my workflow with presets and calibration function. Absolutely LOVE IT!

I had made a (fairly terrible) comparison between the ISE-NIN, which I couldn't pronounce, and the System 8 Jupiter 8 plug out. I noticed the S8 PW went closer to zerocrossing than the ISE-NIN, which is similar to what you're hearing too. System 8 sounds brighter too. Maybe there were menu settings on the ISE-NIN that I missed. Nice to hear 'the real thing' against the ISE-NIN.

Both very similar, the ub-xa has a consistent slight brightness/harshness to it over the ob. It's possible this could mellow down with age. I doubt anyone would notice the difference once it's gone through a pre-amp and some effects/filters with a sound engineer, particularly in any sort of reasonable mix. A more apples for apples would be an ob straight out of the factory brand new in the 80s vs the ub now, time does some things to componenets. Behringer has done a great job at recreating a legend.
@illcritikz21 күн бұрын
I'll add to this, I have an OB-6 which I think is just fantastic and because of it wouldn't buy an OB-8/Xa or UB, but if I didn't have it I'd be very happy with a ub-xa. Apart from pure nostalgia it would be pretty hard to justify an original OB over the UB for the price, reliability and availability. I say this staring at a bunch of 80's synths and drum machines in my collection, but most of them hadn't had a modern recreation when I bought them.

The Jupiter 8 sounds badly out of tune and in need of service. It also sounds like the synths weren't matched by ear, and instead only by slider positions. The comparison has already been made by Alex Ball and they can sound extremely close.

@vintagesynths26 күн бұрын

I didn‘t listen yet but the ISE-NIN isn‘t even close to being a JP-8 clone. SSI2131 instead of discrete VCO, digital envelopes, different clean VCA instead of warm OTA VCA, only the filter is apparently similar in design…it‘s a different synth with some JP-8 marketing attached
@st0rmchild27 күн бұрын
Yes. Deckard's Dream is not a CS-80 clone either. Black Corp's synths are just "inspired by" classic synths and basically bear little resemblance to the originals in terms of sound. DinSync is the only group making real replicas that can be compared 1:1 with the originals.
@ironinquisitor365626 күн бұрын
You're also comparing a brand-new analog to one that is 40 years old. The aging circuits is going to make a huge difference too.

Thanks but... Frankly, to my knowledge, you're the only person on KZbin who can make a Jupiter 8 sound bad, I'm sorry to say. Perhaps your's needs some servicing by a qualified tech, because it also sounds badly out-of-tune from voice to voice at times? Despite all that, I agree with you that the ISE sounds muffled and dull compared to the JP8, even with the filter wide open.
@vintagesynths27 күн бұрын
As I noted, the synths were recorded both through a rack mixer and the signal chain was not optimal. I really hesitated to upload this vid, but it shows that the Ise nin is not capable to sound as warm as the Jupiter-8

When I started releasing music in the 90s, the JX3P was the only synth I had and I used to use it alongside my Amiga 1200 computer. I released a number of tunes on vinyl in the late nineties Drum & Bass scene in the UK and all of the sounds in those tunes where made using the JX3P. In terms of sound design it's capable of allot more than the average demo from Roland will ever express. If you are curious to hear an example of what I was doing with it do a search for 'RareForm - Spinechilla' here on KZbin. In twenty five years, I've not heard anyone making the kinds of sounds with the JX3P that I used to get out of it. As with most synths, it can be pushed allot further than you might think. Cheers!

It's immediately obvious when listening on a good 2.1 hifi system. The original has loads of character, unpredictable noise and sizzle , sounds more alive and almost 3D. The clone sounds lifeless in comparison. It's like the difference between a legit Roland Tape echo and their digital pedal emulation. (Boss) It doesn't have the magic. Of course the average music fan isn't going to tell a difference in the context of a song, but pro musicians with a discerning ear will certainly know.

Nobody noticed that the Polysix, although uses VCOs, doesn't has a TUNE routine and button, like all other analogs. That is because the standard way to tune them is to build an expo converter to each VCO, and tune the converters to match the total tuning. The Polysix has just one expo converter, that is switched between all 6 VCOs, therefore no discrepancies are noticed between them. The VCOs are very linear, therefore is a quite clever way to overcome to a common issue. I can't understand why that technique hasn't been replicated on other synths.

I'm not sure why anyone is trying to compare this to modern keyboards. That's like comparing a television from 1984 to the ones we have today. Of course it's not going to be as good but you can still marvel at how ahead of its time it was back then, especially if you are old enough to have actually lived through it.
